The Mega Drive Mini is really packing them in

Segas mini-sized 16-bit console now has 42 games instead of 40, as two retro rarities are added to the list.

Rather than a final 10, Sega has revealed a final 12 retro games to be added to the Mega Drive Mini, creating an impressive line-up of genuine classics and some interesting curios.

The mini console certainly seems more in line with Nintendos efforts than the disappointing PlayStation Classic, especially as highly regarded developer M2 are handling the emulation.

Todays announcements include Tetris, 2D shooter Darius, Virtua Fighter 2, obscure action platformer Alisia Dragoon, Monster World IV, Kid Chameleon, Road Rash II, fighting game Eternal Champions, puzzler Columns, Strider, Dynamite Headdy, and fellow Treasure game Light Crusader.

The full line-up of games is below and while some will no doubt still pick fault with the selection Sega has clearly put a lot of effort into getting third party publishers on board.

Its the inclusion of Tetris thats the real surprise though as the game was never officially released back in the day. Sega got duped over the rights and when they found out they didnt actually have the licence to publish it had to quickly cancel it, with only a handful of cartridges ever making it into private hands.

Darius is even more peculiar because there is, or rather was, no Mega Drive version of the game. What seems to have happened is that a Japanese fan programmed it themselves and when Sega found out about it they added it to the Mini – or at least thats what we think is going on, as there dont seem to be any English sources confirming the story at the moment.

And just for an extra dose of craziness Sega are releasing fake peripherals for the Mini in Japan, so you can pretend you have a Mega CD, Sega 32X, and a cartridge inserted in it. Although they dont actually do anything.

The Mega Drive Mini console is due out on 19 September and comes in at a surprisingly reasonable £69.99, with two replica controllers.
