Fire has ripped through a major oil refinery in Philadelphia, triggering a huge explosion that rocked homes several miles away.

The Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES) site, which produces 335,000 barrels of crude oil per day according to its website, was engulfed by flames shortly before 4am on Friday, just 11 days after another blaze broke out there.

Despite the severity of the fire, officials said they had managed to contain the blaze and no injuries were reported, as crews from three stations were deployed to tackle the incident.
