“She asked me a question at the end,” Kavanaugh said, “and I responded by asking her a question and Im sorry I did that. This is a tough process. Im sorry I did that.”

“I appreciate that. I would like to add when you have a parent thats an alcoholic, youre pretty careful about drinking,” Klobuchar responded.

The exchange that prompted the apology, which occurred just prior to the break, began when Klobuchar asked Kavanaugh several pointed questions about his drinking habits in high school.

“Youre saying theres never been a case where you drank so much that you didnt remember what happened the night before or part of what happened,” Klobuchar began.

Kavanaugh responded, turning the question back on her: “Youre asking about, yeah, blackout. I dont know — have you?”

“Could you answer the question, judge?” Klobuchar continued, “Just so you have — thats not happened? Is that your answer?”

“Yeah, and Im curious if you have,” he fired back.
