The period of martial law in Taiwan known as the "White Terror" has been dealt with in novels and art-house movies, such as Hou Hsiao-hsien's celebrated A City Of Sadness (1989).

Beginning from just after World War II, thousands were arrested and executed by the Kuomintang government for political crimes. Martial law was not lifted until 1987.
