The new Robin Hood film is copping flack from history buffs even though it hasn't been released yet.

The gritty 2018 reboot directed by Otto Bathurst isn't due out until November, but already people are roasting the film's fashion choices.

A teaser trailer, released on Thursday, gave film buffs the first look at Taron Egerton as the archer from Nottingham. The movie also stars Jamie Foxx as sidekick Little John and Australia's Ben Mendelsohn as Robin Hood's enemy the Sheriff of Nottingham.

But it wasn't the casting choices, but rather the characters' wardrobes, that have people raising their eyebrows.

Eagle-eyed cinemagoers have questioned why a film set in medieval England has its characters dressed in jackets and coats that look like they're straight out of the 21st century.

"Nothing says Robin Hood like a machine-stitched hoodie," one person pointed out on Twitter.

"This is the unnecessary hyper-modernisation of the Robin Hood story I'm talking about," another social media pundit wrote. "Taron Egerton wearing a jacket that looks like something you'd buy from Superdry."

Ben Mendelsohn's character looks like he belongs in the Star Wars universe, not medieval England.

People have also pointed out the similarities between Mendelsohn's costume and that of his character Director Krennick in Star Wars: Rogue One.

"Looks like Ben Mendelsohn wandered off the Rogue One set and stumbled onto the new Robin Hood movie," one fan joked.

Robin Hood is due to hit cinemas on November 21 after two earlier release dates were pushed back. Mendelsohn isn't the only Australian set to make an appearance in the film, with Tim Minchin playing the role of Friar Tuck.
