Authorities busted a high school golf-team head coach in Indiana Tuesday for selling heroin and methamphetamine throughout the community.

Indiana State Police Officers conducting a traffic stop in Columbus, Ind., Tuesday discovered the narcotics in the vehicle of Benjamin Beatty, the varsity golf coach at Greenwood High School. Beatty, who investigators say is under more than $100,000 in various debts, was taken into custody after attempting to resist arrest, the IndyStar reported.

Police secured a search warrant for Beattys home and a rented motel room in Columbus, where they found additional supplies of meth and heroin, along with marijuana. The search also availed packaging materials and counterfeit cash. Beatty was previously fired two years ago from Otte Golf and Family Fun Center in Greenwood over his drug abuse.

“Over the years, I tried to help Ben,” Terry Sherard, owner of Otte Golf and Family Fun Center, told IndyStar. “I thought he was worth saving at one point. It was obvious to us he wasnt getting help. Were a family owned golf course. I cant have that around the children, and the adults as well.”

Beatty faces a number of charges including dealing methamphetamine, dealing heroin, and resisting arrest. Greenwood Community Schools officials are in the process of terminating his employment, they said.

Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of accidental death for Americans under age 50, killing more than 64,000 people in 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The deaths are driven primarily by opioids, which claimed 42,249 lives in 2016 — a 28 percent increase over the roughly 33,000 lives lost to opioids in 2015.

Opioid overdoses made up a staggering 66 percent of all drug overdose deaths in 2016, surpassing the annual number of lives lost to breast cancer.
