Super Mario Galaxy 2 – which level is best?

Super Mario Galaxy 2 – should they remaster it for the Switch?

Thin end of the wedge

Im not sure Zelda: Skyward Sword is a can of worms Nintendo really wants to open. I can see a case for where its maybe a one off, because not many people played it, but what do they do if it goes on to sell well? The temptation to do Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 after that is just going to be too great, then Metroid Prime Trilogy, then well… to be fair the Wii never did have that many classics but would they bring back Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort? It never occurred to me that they might but I guess theyd work with the Joy-Cons, especially if they plugged into some kind of plastic controller thing – which sounds like exactly the sort of things Nintendo would like to do.

For me though Im happy to leave all that in the past. I realise the Switch cant be backwards compatible and thats nobodys fault, especially as Nintendo were pretty good about the issue on the Wii and Wii U, but this constant churn of re-releases and remasters cant go on. Covering themselves for this year I could handle but if this is all still going on next year Im going to consider the Switch a serious disappointment.

Review revengeance

I, much like yourselves GC, thought in hindsight Zelda: Skyward Sword was not as great as I initially believed. However, I recently replayed the game and forgot just how fantastic a game it is with probably the most consistent high-quality dungeons of any Zelda.

Whilst playing through it again, I recalled my initial thought at the time; I could never go back to playing another Zelda game with a gamepad (until of course Breath Of The Wild showed us all otherwise).

Its really great to hear the news Skyward Sword could potentially be getting a remaster on the Switch so other people can (re-)appreciate what a great game it still is.

GC: We had to reappraise it to a degree for the review of Breath Of The Wild, but we have to say we would look forward to an excuse to replay the whole thing and give it a proper re-review.

Alien legacy

A new Alien shooter by the people that made City Of Heroes? Excuse me if I dont get too excited, especially as their website says theres only 30 of them. That doesnt exactly sound like a big budget project. Maybe thats all Alien deserves nowadays but I wouldve loved a sequel to Alien Isolation.

I accept it was too long and the story was weak but the atmosphere was just out of the world. I have never been so scared playing video game, but also I have never seen a video game capture the look and feel of a movie so perfectly. Even with its problems Alien Isolation was still the third best Alien film!

Im not even sure what my hopes are for the new game, other than they remember its still supposed to be scary and its only ever Aliens that was an action film. Well see I guess but its going to have to be something really special to live up to the legacy.

Wait and see

Not really surprised to see Darksiders III getting bad reviews, I remember GCs preview was very negative, since it was all just combat. If thats the case for the game as a whole then I think Im out. In my mind at least the whole point of Darksiders is that it was this hodgepodge of different games that all melded together. This just sounds like a poor mans Bayonetta and… Dark Souls?

I guess it all does come down to money though and Im sure they wouldve made something bigger if they couldve. I guess well see if it sells well enough to deserve a fourth game – if its low budget that means it has to sell less – but I think theyre going to be lucky if they get to finish out the series with a Strife game (I assume thats whats theyre aiming for).

I hate to be that person but personally Im just going to wait till its on cheap, which seems pretty inevitable and will probably even be this year. Black Friday has set a precedent and I am not paying £40+ for a game that sounds pretty flawed, even if I did like the other ones.

Loading now…

I missed the Hot Topic about what you want from the next generation but if I had a wish it would be to get rid of loading times once and forever. Ive no idea whats involved in doing this, on a hardware level, but I hate the fact that some games still have these great big ugly pauses when they load a new scene or your go in or out of a new area.

I know Fallout 76 isnt the best example to make when it comes to technical proficiency but the wait from just going into or out of a building is crazy and kills the atmosphere.

As usual Rockstar seem to have the right approach in that their games take ages to load up initially but then theres nothing else in the game (except fast travel cut scenes, which I assume are hiding loading). Id much rather that than the constant stop/start mood-killing.

Final word

I just wanted to write to pass on the bad news that GamesTM magazine has ended.

I have bought this magazine every week for at least the past 10 years, changing to buy this from the other magazine as I felt it cared more about gaming.

Theres a lot I could say about its merits as a good partner to GameCentral reviews but I think the final paragraph in this months final edition from the editor says it all…

Im proud to say that GamesTM leaves as it entered: fiercely independent, unrepentant, forthright, unwavering, driven, curious, passionate and, above all else, made by a small team of gamers who love that they get to do this for a living… Jonathon Gordan.

GC: Its closure was announced last month, alongside GamesMaster.

The Christmas effect

Beat Saber looks great, I think Im definitely going to get it, for my lovely cheap new PlayStation VR. Ive been playing it all weekend and it really is fantastic. Ive used it before, so it wasnt totally my first time, but it definitely wasp laying Astro Bot and Moss, which are just amazingly good. Never wouldve guessed the best VR games would be third person!

But with Beat Saber now and Tetris Effect it almost seems like were getting a top quality PlayStation VR game every week. I guess thats the Christmas effect but whatever it is Ill take it. Especially as weve got Borderlands VR coming out soon as well.

Using VR really does seem like future tech and Im still a little shocked it works so well. The thought of what an upgraded version could be like in the next generation is just as exciting. Except I suppose itll go back to being expensive and Ill have to wait a couple a years for the 2022 Black Friday…

GC, is there any chance you can go back to the evening Inbox being at 5ish instead of 6ish? It was earlier for a while and now it seems to have dropped back down?

GC: When the evening Inbox is late its because were not getting enough letters. The number of people reading the Inbox is as high as ever but the number of those contributing has dropped considerably in the last few weeks. We cannot run the Inbox properly without more letters.

This weeks Hot Topic

The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader stanley71, who asks what do you think of the current generation of console so far?

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are five years old this month and both are expected to be superseded by next generation models within the next two years. So what do you think of them so far, in terms of their games, their hardware, and the changes theyve brought to the industry?

If you include the Wii U and Switch as well what do you think of the generation as a whole and is it better or worse than previous ones? How do you think it will be looked back on when all is said and done, and which companies have done the best and worst overall?
