Midnight oil
Well, Ive decided: Im going to stay up and watch all of The Game Awards tonight. I dont have work till 2pm so I should still be able to get a bit of sleep and wont have to be checking all over online tomorrow to find out what happened. Or at least thats the plan. Probably Ill fall asleep before it event starts and just read it all on GC tomorrow.
Either way I hope its a good show and there are still some surprises left. We dont seem to have had many leaks today so thats a good sign. Hope theres some kind of twist behind Far Cry – I think Battle Royale sounds quite plausible.
Im hoping to see at least Metroid Prime 4 from Nintendo, but hopefully Bayonetta 3 as well. Not sure if Microsoft and Sony are going to be there but Im pulling for BioWare to have a good night and maybe, finally Borderlands 3.
In terms of who wins the actual awards my vote would go for God Of War, but Ive got a feeling its just going to be Red Dead Redemption II.

Achievable hopes
Looks like Microsoft is teasing some kind of special annoucement at The Game Awards. I dont know whether the clip below being from Devil May Cry 5 is supposed to be a hint but either way its good to know that all the companies will be there, because I think Sonys boss is putting in an appearance too.
Not sure what Microsoft could be about to reveal, given all the obvious examples probably wouldnt be happening just yet. Id love if it was a Fable reboot teaser but thats probably hoping too much. More likely itll be some indie games like the Below release date annoucement. I dont think the Ori sequel has one, for example.
Or maybe a beta for Crackdown 3? Thatd be pretty good and seems reasonable to hope for. If Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo all start competing for the best reveal at the awards then this could work out really well for us gamers.

Wish for the unexpected
I wrote in a few weeks ago asking what you lot would like to see in the next Call Of Duty and your reply was something new. Would you elaborate a little more on that? I mean, they have done the world war games, they have done modern day games, and also done their futuristic games.
There isnt much more left is there? So come on, where would you like 2019 Call Of Duty to be set and something new isnt an answer because lets be honest every game is meant to be new, so come on then place your bets?!

GC: We want something new that we cant guess at. Dont you like to be surprised? But if you push us then we always liked the idea of a proper hard sci-fi game with no aliens or magic spaceships but real science and environmental problems. Theyll never do it though, especially if theres no story mode.

Disappointment total
I am almost at the end of Red Dead Redemption II and to say its been a disappointment is an understatement. The original is one of my favourite gams of all times and so my anticipation for the sequel was sky high.
However, behind the phenomenal tech, well written characters, and interesting storylines is one of the most uninteresting games that Ive ever played. The whole game plays out identically.
Ride for ages, have a conversation, cut scene, shootout. The mechanics are really annoying and its just in no way fun to play. The only reason I have made it to (almost) the end is because of the aforementioned characters, story, and tech.
Its the most disappointed Ive ever been in a game.
On the plus side, this year for me truly has been the year of VR.
Astro Bot is without question my game of the year, closely followed by Tetris Effect, Beat Saber, and Moss.

Old school value
Sorry to mention it again but Id just like to strongly recommend Horizon Chase Turbo once again, especially to retro racer/arcade racing fans. Please dont wait for it to go on sale as it would be a shame if the developers lost money and no more racers of this type were made, plus its well worth the 17 odd quid that it costs.
In an age of over-realistic simulation racers (dont get me wrong, I really enjoyed Forza Horizon 3) its brilliant to go around the tightest bends with my thumb welded to the Xbox pad A button (no, I dont like using the right trigger to accelerate either) and the biggest complement that I can pay it is that after four months Ive finally found something to drag me off Resident Evil 5: The Mercenaries mode.

Difficult times
Things are not really going very well for Bethesda, are they? First, the huge patch that you had to download for Fallout 76, then to add insult to injury they had to replace the canvas bags they sent out. Now the latest problem is that people were receiving other peoples support tickets with personal information such as names addresses and credit card information.
Bethesda has really shot themselves right in the foot and all these problems could be enough to finish them as a company. Even their response to this information leak I felt was poor, to say the least by LadyDevann over at their forums.

GC: Clearly its been a bad few weeks for Bethesda, but theres absolutely no sign that theyre in any kind of financial trouble.
Work for pay
Someone mentioned the Resident Evil movie reboot the other day and I just saw its been announced that British director Johannes Roberts is going to be doing it. Thats not exactly something to get excited about if you ask me as his films 47 Meters Down and Storage 24 were pretty bad if you ask me. The Strangers: Prey at Night wasnt very good either.
Looks like they just got someone cheap rather that someone that could elevate it into a proper movie, so I guess the games will continue to be the best part of the franchise.

From me to me
In response to the reader who wrote in regarding Hollow Knight, I would have to say I agree with their sentiments. I too have completed the game over the course of 45 hours or so and found myself pushing through to the end, eagerly awaiting the end boss. Metroidvania games are my personal favourite and Hollow Knight is up there with the best, but I have no intention of revisiting it. I would much prefer to replay Super Metroid, Ori And The Blind Forest, or Shadow Complex.
For me the game was over-stretched with poor save locations, especially given the nature of the numerous bosses. I play Metroidvania-esque games as the sense of progression is tangible even after short bursts on the game. The tiresome and often huge difficulty spikes of the bosses really slowed the flow and is the root cause rather than the expansive areas Team Cherry implemented.
I often spent an evening traversing from a save bench to the boss time and time again only to be killed within a few minutes. I eventually got there but it did sour the overall experience.

PS: On a completely different note; do GC or any readers buy themselves gaming Christmas presents? Not everyone has the chance to ask for gifts depending on family circumstances and this year I have bought myself Rare Replay and Yokus Island Express for the big day (Ill even leave the installing to then too!).
