The Witcher 3 – will you be playing it again?

The Evening Inbox wonders whether Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare might be delayed, as one reader admits to liking Candy Crush Saga.

PLEASE NOTE: The Evening Inbox will be back this week as a trial, but we still barely had enough letters for todays edition. If you still want there to be two Inboxes a day we need more letters on a consistent basis, and without taking away from the Hot Topic and Readers Feature – which we also do not have enough of at the moment.

Return player

It may not have been a classic E3 this year but I still thought there were a number of fun surprises, but probably the biggest shocker was finding out that The Witcher 3 is actually a thing that is happening. I have no idea how and can barely understand why, but it certainly got me excited… at the time.

As someone thats played all of the original and its DLC I was chomping at the bit to play through it again on Switch and then I thought… do I really want to spend another 200 hours doing something Ive already done but with worse graphics. Theres the whole portable novelty and the chance to make different decisions than you did the first time round but thats still a hell of a time investment.

So who here is going to do it all again anyway? Id assume the game is primarily aimed at people that havent played it before but Im sure they must be banking on return players as well, like Bethesda did with Skyrim. And despite what Ive just said I have a feeling Ill still be one of them.

Ice cream cake

Does anyone else have a bad feeling about Pokémon Sword/Shield? When it first get shown I thought it looked like the 3D game wed all been waiting for but the more I see the more it seems like only a very small step forward. The graphics are clearly much worse than most other Switch games and the gameplay doesnt seem to have evolved at all.

And while Im sure theres dozens and dozens yet to reveal I dont think Ive liked a single new pokémon yet. That one yesterday, that was basically just a giant cake, was particularly bad. It was like they took all the complaints about Vanillish and tried to make something even more stupid. Well, job done I guess!

The chance has probably passed by now but I always thought it was weird that Nintendo never bought the Pokémon brand outright, as Id much better trust them to make a true evolution of the series than Game Freak who seem to always be dragging their heels. Lets just say this is not one I would pre-order.

Hes not Turok

So that new look for Turok is… interesting. Its quite cute, so I might be interested if it reviews okay, but I do like the idea that a big company like Universal was encouraging indie developers to make up weird and wacky games to work with their IP. Thats actually really positive and Id like to see more of it.

It reminded me of when you interview the John Wick Hex guy, who said the filmmakers were purposefully looking for something unexpected for the game instead of just making a Max Payne clone like many wouldve assumed.

Like he said, there are so many movies that would make great games but theyre all used in the most boring and obvious way possible. Or not at all in most cases. That said, I have no idea whats going on with that Voltron game. I thought that was about a giant transforming robot where all the individual parts were lions. Or have I got that mixed up with something else?

GC: No, thats Voltron. Which now we think about it weve never seen a full episode of.

Dying Fire

I always enjoy when GC brings up Advance Wars in interview, as no matter the developer they always seem to agree its great. But I think theres another important reason to consider on why it needs to return: Fire Emblem is terrible now.

Now obviously I havent played the new game but the amount of anime storytelling in the last few games has got so bad I can barely bring myself to play them now. Having a story is fine but it buries the gameplay so deep in its list of priorities that Im sure I can be bothered to dig it out again.

The whole Harry Potter/Valkyria Chronicles II vibe Im getting from the new game is already a massive turn-off and I really dont want to play through some high fantasy land version of a school drama just to enjoy some turn-based combat.

Bring back Nell, Andy, and the rest from Advance Wars. They were a lot more fun and, importantly, they didnt get in the way of the action.

In answer to the readers question I very rarely play mobile games. I remember trying out a bunch a few years ago, when they first became a thing, and being unimpressed. Now I just assume every new game that comes out is just going to be riddled with microtransactions and generally exploitive.

Funnily enough the only one I do reach for, if Im bored or stuck somewhere, is Candy Crush Saga which really is not a bad game. As you said, the microtransactions are easy to avoid, especially if you only ever play it for 10 minutes at a time anyway, and the puzzles are usually very clever.

Id never play it on purpose at home or anything but itll probably always stay on my phone, for emergencies. Im sure part of Candy Crushs success was being an early bird but its also a pretty good game, despite what some might have you think.

Profitable decision

That is a weird amount of effort that Activision are putting into the update for Black Ops 4. Does that make anyone else think that maybe they might be preparing for a delay of Modern Warfare? And that would explain why weve seen so little of it? I mean, it doesnt make much sense making your old Call Of Duty game seem really good when youre trying to sell a new one.

Or am I being naive? Are the microtransactions coming in thick enough on Black Ops 4 that its better to keep people on board with that rather than worrying whether the new one is a hit or not?

I really do worry one day that some companies will decide that the whole video game side of things just isnt worth the trouble and start making interactive Panini albums. I mean, thats where all the money from FIFA comes from at the moment so why not cut out all the less profitable stuff, like the game, and just concentrate on the bit that makes the most money.

Im over exaggerating, I hope, but sometimes it feels like thats what were moving towards. Especially if you count mobile.

The right stuff

Really happy to read so many positive previews of Luigis Mansion 3. I always thought the first was too short, but it was fun and at least demonstrated Nintendo branching out into other genres.

I dont own a 3DS and so have never played the sequel, but the third seems to be ticking all my boxes. Could it be game of the year material, GC?
Matt

GC: We wouldnt suggest something like that till we play more of it. But we will say it was our favourite playable game at E3.
