Survival decisions

I cant tell you how much Im looking forward to the Resident Evil 2 remake, it just sounds completely perfect. At least for a long time Resi fan like me. Not sure how younger gamers are going to take to its slower pace, but it doesnt sound like it is necessarily that slow anyway a lot of the time.

Its obvious its going to be a success at this point so it makes me wonder what Capcom are going to do for Resident Evil 8. I really liked 7 but it took a very different direction than the remake and if that ends up being more successful… thats quite a decision to make. Personally Id be happy to have them make two games in parallel: one retro and one new but Im not sure whether thats possible. Also, you dont want to overdo it with too many.

Also complicating things is that apparently the movie reboot is going to be based on 7, and more of a horror film than any of the others. Id like to see Resident Evil 8 stay first person to be honest, but its a difficult thing. Once you start adding back in more thing from the older games, especially the characters, it becomes more tempting to change everything back. Be very interested to see what Capcom decide to do.

Bad week

Why do I get the feeling I can write next weeks chart report before its ever been released? I dont know if Square Enix thought the lack of reviews would help Just Cause 4 or if its just some kind of mix-up but them trickling out one at a time is not helping it. No one seems to be talking about it and the conversation is going to switch (geddit?) to Smash Bros. Ultimate any day now, and itll be like it never came out.

Its just so stupid I cant understand it. I was quite interested in the game and the irony is it does seem to be getting decent reviews, but Id be crazy not to just wait a month or so and get it for half the price. Because thats obviously the fate its heading for. Totally unnecessarily.

Any idea when you review will be, GC?
Monstrux

GC: Were not sure, to be honest. Well try and make it this week, but between Smash Bros. and The Game Awards this is not, as you point out, a good week to be releasing a supposedly major game.

Final hype

I am now seriously considering staying up till 3am on Thursday night to watch the Game Awards. They were really good last year, but that was when they were on a Friday and I didnt have work on the morning. I guess moving it back a day and still so early means they really dont care about Europe watching (the mainland is an hour even later!).

Im quite curious to see what game wins game of the year too. Itd be weird debuting new movie trailers at the Oscars but thats kind of what this is, except Im not sure anyone really used to care that much about the awards bit before. The winners have been pretty solid the last few years though and this year its obvious the only two real contenders are God Of War and Red Dead Redemption II.

Im going to assume Rockstar win just because of the hype but as someone thats only recently finished Im not sure its really that good. It is good, dont get me wrong, but I felt it dragged on far too long and the gameplay was never really that great – so restrictive too, in most of the missions. God Of War wasnt perfect either, with too few enemy types, but itd get my vote.

Triple combo

Looking forward to your Super Smash Bros. Ultimate review, GC. The last preview was a lot more positive than I was expecting, and Im hoping that it will finally have a single-player mode thats worth everyones time. Whens the review embargo? I hope its not day of release as thats always a bad sign.

This could be a big week for Nintendo if they manage to steal some headlines at The Game Awards as well. They really need to make it clear that this year was a one-off and theyll be a lot more regular with big releases after that. Thats going to mean announcing a lot of release dates, which I dont think theyd do outside of a Nintendo Direct.

I hope they do have one more before the end of the year. If Smash Bros. reviews well, they have a good Game Awards, and then they finish off with a jam-packed Direct that could be the perfect end to a meh year. Always best to go out on a high and all that.
Shane

GC: Were not sure were allowed to say when the embargo is, but its before Friday.

Awkward conversation

Has anybody started to think about how the brown, suspicious-smelling storm that is Fallout 76 is going to impact your meeting with Bethesda staff in upcoming and inevitable interviews for things like E3? And that applies to the entire press, in fact.

How do you think that conversation will start? Er, hi… so Fallout 76 wasnt exactly the best game around… Or will you or anybody even bring it up? Things could get super awkward.

On the bright side, the endless stream of controversy has introduced me to Fleetwood Macs Little Lies. So thank you, Todd Howard. Thanks for all those sweet, little lies.
DMR

GC: Lets just hope Rage 2 is good, for everybodys sake.

No charities

Im not sure Ill bother with the next generation of consoles. I have all of them now and dont understand why there is a need to bring the next generation around for a few years at least. In the past Ive been an early adopter and looked forward to seeing what games companies can do with the extra power, etc. But now I feel that everything has peaked really. How much can graphics really improve? How much bigger can games really become?

Id be more than happy if there was no further consoles for another five years. I think my next major gaming purchase will be a decent PC. I honestly feel that Sony and Microsoft are rushing the next generation out purely for money and not for any real need.
Neil

GC: Well… it will be at least one year, possibly two. And everything every company ever does is purely for money.

New year Tour

The Grand Tour video game looks absolutely terrible, yet Im weirdly curious about it.

I thought it was initially a mobile game when I first heard about it but turns it out it will be for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in the new year. Do you plan on doing a review GC?
Beems

GC: We suppose so, although weve never heard of it until now.

Made to fit

Adams6legends letter on Tuesday evening struck a chord with me, in his mentioning of games having proper music.

At the time when CD-based consoles were released, licensed music was exciting, it was the future. WipEout and Gran Turismo were both acclaimed for their licensed soundtracks. Nowadays though it just seems lazy (to me anyway) and that the developer cant be bothered to compose anything to fit the game. There are exceptions of course, like Grand Theft Auto, as theres obvious effort been put into making the radio stations with the DJs, adverts and such (I did even buy one of the GTA: Vice City CDs that got released!).

Forza Horizon 4 has got a similar approach with the radio stations, but most of the tracks on there seem to be complete guff and the hosts werent much better. 99% of the time I play it, I turn the in-game radio off as it just grates on me.

In contrast, older games where the soundtrack was made to suit had some really memorable tunes. All these years later, I still love to hear themes like Chemical Plant Zone; Cammy, Ken Ryu, and Guiles theme; the Streets Of Rage II soundtrack; Big Blue and Mute City in F-Zero GX. Even back when arcades used to actually have games, not just fruit machines, Id love to play the Daytona USA 2 medium track just to listen to the music and OutRun 2 for Splash Wave. Who doesnt love the original Daytona tracks, lets all sing: I want to fryy-y-yy sky hiiiigh, lets go-o-oo togethe-e-er. And Tetris, who hasnt had the Tetris theme as an ear worm?

I just cant say the same for many games nowadays, and I think all it started with licensed music in games (I will give a pass to Xenon 2, as Bomb the Bass was great in that!).

How about a Hot Topic of your most memorable non-licensed soundtrack or theme?
Dan H.

Never mind remastering or remaking Crash Team Racing, when are they gonna bring back Crash Bash?! Theres just not enough four-player local co-op games around…
Shu

Does anyone worry this whole bag-gate nonsense might actually be the end of Bethesda? The poor sales of the game are the bigger problem, obviously, but this still feels really, really bad.

This weeks Hot Topic

The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader Preston, who asks what older game would you still like to see get a remake or remaster?

With games even as obscure as Toki now getting full-blown remakes, and following the huge success of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro The Dragon, we want to know what games you think still need to make a comeback and whether you think they could really be a hit again.

It can be any game from any era, even if theyve still got current sequels, but we want to know exactly what you would – and wouldnt – change about the game. How much would the graphics have to change and how outdated will the gameplay seem to modern gamers? And most importantly, do you honestly think itll ever happen?
