The morning Inbox is getting very excited about Red Dead Redemption IIs launch day, as one reader tries to save up for a PSVR at Christmas.

Microsoft difference
Im still surprised that Microsoft didnt try and do an exclusivity deal with Red Dead Redemption II, considering it looks better on the Xbox One X. And since its the best-looking game ever that means the Xbox One X… has the best version of the best-looking game ever.
Presumably this means that Sony paid more but how was a company the size of Microsoft not able to outbid them? They even got an extra mission and DLC out of it. Just add it to the long list of weird marketing decisions theyve made this gen I guess.
But I will be interested in seeing exactly how Red Dead does in next weeks charts. It might only be physical sales but the breakdown between formats is going to be very interesting. If its closer than usual then that will be a pretty good indication that people do care about the extra power of the Xbox One X, which should be very encouraging for Microsoft.

Ultimate update
This leak for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sure is some crazy stuff. Or rather the fans are crazy. Like, absolutely nuts. The amount of details theyve gone into trying to prove and disprove the rumours is insane. Theyre like Internet detectives gone mad. Its been hard to keep up with everything but as far as I understand most of the evidence is pointing towards it being true.
I think the best thing about it is that unlike most leaks it doesnt take anything away from the official reveal. Its going to be just as intense watching the Nintendo Direct when it happens just to see if its right or not. If the first character reveal is on the money then the Internet is going to go insane.
But I do agree with the other reader that the lack of ARMS characters proves theres going to be more DLC characters. I imagine work on the game began before ARMS was finished and so thats the only way to get them. It would be crazy to leave them out because not only are they a new franchise but theyre fighters by nature. Cant wait!

The wider picture
I think the Red Dead Redemption II reviews are pretty much what I expected and certainly havent put me off playing the game. I love Rockstars stuff but I would never pretend they played the best, only that playing them was the best… if that makes sense?
Their open worlds are unbeatable and the new Red Dead seems to have a decent story and amazing graphics on top of that. Honestly, its all about the immersion and the bigger picture rather than any particular bit being the best in its field (again, except the graphics).
I do wonder why, with all their money and resources, the combat isnt a bit better but since GTA V Ive thought that its at least decent. Roll on launch day I say, Ill be there!

Christmas race
Ive made some calculations and if I assume Ill get to play Red Dead Redemption II for two hours per day, that means the earliest I could possibly finish it is November 25. Now, theres no way Ill actually be able to put in that much regular play, although I should be able to get a lot more this weekend, as my girlfriend knows its coming out and has arranged to be doing other things.
I dont want to turn myself into a recluse but also I do want to beat the game before Christmas. That does seem doable but its going to take a bit of a regime. I want to play the game fairly quickly, so I remember everything thats going on, but I also dont want to rush it. Heres hoping I hit that happy medium!

Admit nothing
Theres been a lot of talk lately about how DLC is almost always rubbish but I wonder whats the absolute worse that anyones ever played. For me I think itd have to be Batman: Arkham Knight. I think thats a pretty common opinion, as far as I can tell but it really was shocking. It was something like £30 and the only half decent thing you got was a little mini story campaign with Batgirl. It was all right but nothing special and didnt really do anything new.
Everything else was just worthless skins I never used and terrible driving courses. For some reason they got it into their heads that they should homage old Batman films, which is fine, but instead of setting the races just in the movie they made it so you were driving around the film set. So half the course was just scaffolding and lights and such.
Just completely awful and it was pretty obvious they charged for the season pass without any idea what was going to be in it other than Batgirl. Might be an idea for a Hot Topic? Whats the worst DLC youve bought?

GC: Hot Topics about the worst game or thing youve ever played never work. People are just too ashamed to admit theyve bought something rubbish.
Expensive Christmas
Little bit late to the party but I was able to get a go on Astro Bot at a mates house and it is just as amazing as everyone is saying. The gameplay is pretty shamefully a rip-off of Mario but the way the VR stuff works is like nothing Ive ever seen. When the big monkey boss first appears its shocking just how big he is, and thats only the half of it. The first underwater level is amazing in how it looks and makes you feel like youre right there.
I agree that its only price which is keeping VR back, because after just one go Im sold on the tech and definitely want one. I just dont have £200 laying around, or whatever the official price is and although Christmas is coming up its still a big spend with the next generation coming up (which will probably have a new headset, which is probably why theyre getting discounted now).
I do want one though, Im very tempted. Ill see how some of the games GC previewed the other week turn out and maybe Ill have a joint Christmas and birthday present…

Secret hobby
My iPhone just updated – it now has an app on it that lets you measure the length of things using the phones camera. Its actually fairly accurate. Must be voodoo or something.
I wonder if Shigeru Miyamotos paying attention – he might finally be able to release the game hes always dreamed of.

GC: Were impressed you remember that was his thing. There was a guess how long things are mini-game used as a tech demo for the Wii U but we forget whether it ended up in an actual game or not.

American future
Interesting review of Red Dead Redemption II but its sounding like the game Id hoped it would be except for one detail. Some of the niggles you mention are the ones I was concerned about myself, such as what sounds like quite a lot of needless walking and talking, for the sake of being a time filler/game extender if you will.
Part of the issue I had with GTA Vs single-player mode were the filler missions, the heist set-up missions, which included simple tasks such as finding a four-door car and parking it up to use as a getaway vehicle after the heist. That small task among many others like it, counted as a full mission, So I did wonder if Red Dead II would follow a similar pattern of simple tasks clogging the story but all in all Im sure Ill be blown away by the rest.
As for the future of GTA, I can see it unfortunately becoming GTA Online 2 as opposed to being GTA VI. The whole Trump thing seems like quite a soft excuse from Rockstar, who dont seem to normally care about whats said about them. However, surely a simple solution, which most people I imagine would welcome anyway, would be a non-US setting. I prefer GTA to Red Dead but GTA V always felt like a step back single-player wise for me personally, so Im in no rush for the next one.
And although its been a couple a of years since he left, I do wonder if the lack of Leslie Benzies has affected or will in the near future affect how Rockstar go about their business. I dont know much of each of the bigwigs of R* and the roles they hold/held but a team losing a member after so long together usually impacts one way or another.

GC: Rockstar have said before that theyd never again make a GTA that was set outside of the US. It would only take a name change to get around that, but whether theyd actually do such a thing remains to be seen.

Metro 2033 is free on Steam for next 24 hours at time of writing (Thursday evening) it says on a GameSpot article. I am unable to check if it is free as I already own the game.

GC: Apparently it is, heres the link.
So does Red Dead Redemption II have a bit like the first one where the music starts playing as you enter Mexico? Thats one of my favourite all time moments in a game.
Kanga
GC: We think most people would constitute that as a spoiler, if we told you.
