Does a Zelda movie make sense?

The morning Inbox is still puzzled by the UKs unpredictable sales charts, as one reader celebrates a tough Dark Souls III boss fight.

Nintendo cinematic universe

Interesting news about the Netflix Zelda series, but although all the evidence is pointing in that direction I cant help think of all the times weve been disappointed by these sort of rumours. Remember when Sony was going to make a Mario movie or John Woo was going to make a Metroid film? Maybe not because, of course, it never happened.

I also remember, just before the Switch came out and they didnt know if it was going to be a hit or not, they said they were going to get a lot better at merchandising and getting their stuff out there in other media and… that didnt happen either. I know its Nintendo, so we shouldnt be surprised, but Id love to see it happen.

Just think of how many characters are in Super Smash Bros. Not all of them would support a movie but you could get a cartoon series out of every single one of them at least. So why not create a cinematic universe like Marvel? Zelda and Metroid could definitely be movies, so could F-Zero and Fire Emblem. And while I dont see Mario getting too dark and gritty its long overdue he was in an animated show.

Nintendo really seem to undersell themselves sometime and I hope this Netflix thing is real and the start of something new.

Initial Odyssey

Just wanted to say that I seem to be addicted to Assassins Creed Odyssey at the moment and that it really is value for money and also that its the first Assassins Creed that Ive ever played. Its a little repetitive 100 hours in but absolutely gorgeous in places (reminds me of a beautiful sunset in Zakynthos that I saw many years ago with the purple sunrises) but I havent felt like Ive had to grind up the levels and Ive just hit level 50 without clearing a lot of the map.

Ive done around 112 hours and am only 60% clear on the main story but Im someone that likes to explore rather than head for the games exit by finishing the main missions. Usually when I hit a mission Im already handing over the fetch quest items that the person is after by playing in my style of play.

I thought the season pass was pretty hefty when I checked the PlayStation store (£32.99 I think) but Im now itching at a purchase, hoping to the Greek gods that they had more mythological beasts to the proceedings. Its the only thing that its been lacking so far in my opinion, as well as a little more variety.

I personally have enjoyed the mercenaries chasing me down and I love sticking the final blow in the cultists. I think theyve got a lot right with this game. Reminds me a lot of The Witcher as Im playing it.

Impractical upgrade

I would just like to make clear the point of me writing in about 8K. I understand it is something that will not be used for a few years yet and I am by no means excited by it or bigging it up. What my point is, is that it is a reality now and giving the timespan of the release of the next gen consoles, by the time these consoles are in their second year then 8K will be a lot more accessible to the masses.

Like it or not, games will be made for this format regardless of what they add to it. What my concern is will Microsoft and Sony address this now and make their next console 8K ready or will they repeat what they have done this time round and expect anyone that wants an 8K console to upgrade to another console two or three years later.

Nothing has been announced, so there is no excuse for them to say it was too late to add it and they will release another console that includes it. I dont know if I could afford an 8K TV in two or three years time, but I would like to have the peace of mind that the next console I buy can run with it and that I am not expected to fork out for another console like they did with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

GC: Wed hope theyre not silly enough to start pushing it. As has been pointed out by other readers the TV screen would have to be gigantic for you to even notice the difference it makes.

Rates? What rates?

Im astonished that some people think being compelled by your employer to work excessive hours is perfectly reasonable. If you actively want to work all hours to get some overtime pay, good for you but it becomes a problem when its expected of everyone (Ill naively give Rockstar the benefit of the doubt and assume all the crunch hours were paid at overtime rates). Thats just a race to the bottom.

Im sure Rockstar devs could leave if they didnt want money to buy things, and Im sure they could walk into another job, assuming their unwillingness to be pressured to opt out of their legal protections werent viewed by Rockstar as them being difficult co-workers, jeopardising their references.

Lets not blame the staff for the disgraceful behaviour of the employer, eh?

Anyway…on a calmer note, I thought Id have a new dawn when I bought a Switch, avoiding a backlog. Its safe to say that, thanks to the indie games in the eShop, that hasnt happened.

Currently playing: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2, a bunch of other stuff all on Swich, and (still!) Mass Effect 3 (360)

GC: Its alleged that much of the overtime was unpaid.

Getting old

I bought Red Dead Redemption II from Argos for £44.99 thanks to an O2 voucher for £5. My only problem with my copy of the game is I installed the game on my Xbox One and when I try and start the game from install I just get a black screen and nothing happens but it will turn my Xbox off after a few minutes.

So I had to turn it on again and take the disc out and put it back in again for the game to start. This has happened a few times now, so I just take the disc out and put it in again when I want to play. Have you heard anyone else having this problem? My Xbox One is a launch one, so maybe it is just getting old.

GC: It does sound like maybe its a hardware problem, but we havent heard of the issue before.

Dark perseverance

Jubilations! After an exigent and onerous 65 attempts Ive managed to surmount tremendous difficulties with the conquest of Prince Lorian and Lothric in Dark Souls III.

What a wicked selection of moves the bothersome brothers deployed to crush my chances of victory. The epic battle was truly an assault on the senses and pushed my resolve to the brink.

Id constantly marvel at how sophisticated and creative the bosses attack patterns were – especially the ones involving Lorian initiating a combo, teleporting midway through the sequence, and then resuming the attack when hed reappear. Bloody artful that, and highly reminiscent of my beloved Bayonettas repertoire.

Amazingly, whilst I was getting pulverised over and over I not once felt let down by the laser-cutting precision of the controls, and increasingly appreciated the super responsiveness in the command inputs that rendered the experience so fluid to play.

What a magnificent boss fight. Kudos to Hidetaki Miyazaki and co for their prodigious talents!

Anniversary annoucement

The Adi Shankar/Netflix announcement due for November 16 could well be a Zelda series – its just a few days before the 20th anniversary of the initial Ocarina Of Time release.

Maybe it will coincide with a Classic Mini N64 announcement.

GC: Maybe itll be part of the rumoured second Nintendo Direct. We guess well have to wait and see.

Retail anomaly

It seems frustrating that well probably never get a proper idea of whats going on with UK sales this year. Even if they do start adding in digital sales next year I assume theyre not going to backdate the info or anything. But the situation seems to get weirder almost every week. Red Dead Redemption II has the biggest opening weekend in history and yet it isnt even the biggest opening of the year in the UK?

Unless the vast majority went out and bought it digitally (which seems unlikely considering how huge the download is) and then did the exact opposite with FIFA 19 I dont see how there isnt something very unusual happening in the UK.

I remember Assassins Creed Odyssey doing worse in the UK too, but worldwide it actually did better than Origins. So whats going on? Especially as the UK usually has a smaller percentage of digital sales compared to everyone else because of our high online prices. Did everyone suddenly become a millionaire when I wasnt looking? Did Britain decide it just doesnt like games anymore unless theyre literally FIFA or Call Of Duty? Its odd and it makes me worry about the fate of more niche games, which obviously Red Dead isnt.

Inbox also-rans

Just a quick heads up that Battlefield 1 is one of this months Games with Gold games on Xbox. Currently the season pass is free to get, so get it now before the free game drops.

RE: Matt. You said you received an email from Amazon with a £6 voucher code to use against any version of FIFA 19, I recently received £4 credit from EA for simply playing the demo on Xbox One. I would have £10 if I could please have your unwanted code.

GC: Sending an email to ask for a code is not what we mean by a useable letter.

This weeks Hot Topic

Its Halloween this week, so the subject for this weekends Inbox is whats the scariest enemy youve ever had to deal with in a video game?

The enemies dont necessarily have to be from a horror game, just as long as theyve scared you – either now or when you were younger. What was it about them that made them so frightening and do you think they worked as the developer intended or was it a happy (or unhappy) accident?

What makes for truly scary enemies and whats the most important part of their design? Is it their visuals, sound, abilities, back story, or something else? Do you like playing scary games and will you be playing any this week?
