The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess – the most imperfect Zelda?

What should be next for Link and Zelda?

The morning Inbox tries to guess Super Smash Bros. Ultimates five DLC characters, as one reader objects to hunting in Red Dead Redemption II.

Change of scenery

Of course its obvious that Nintendo would be working on a new Zelda but its nice to have the proof, especially as it could take them years to announce it themselves. My feeling is it will be that kind of wait though as if they were going to rush something out we wouldve heard about it by now, I think.

Since Breath Of The Wild did especially well for the series I think theyll try and ensure its their premium franchise and really take their time about making each one special. Thats what Id do anyway and I think it makes sense.

As to what the next game should be Im hoping that it will build on Breath Of The Wild but still be significantly different. The problem is the setting I think. I dont think another green-hilled fantasy setting will be enough again, especially with things like Red Dead and The Witcher around now. I mean, Red Dead Redemption II could be Hyrule if you just kept the landscape and I think thats a sign the next Zelda should be different.

I always liked the idea of setting it in the future, especially as the game has already had plenty of time travel in it already and the robot area was the best bit of Skyward Sword. Of course if they come up with some kind of new gameplay gimmick, like Majoras Mask, the setting isnt such a problem. Whatever theyre planning I cant wait to hear more about it… eventually.

Water good idea

An Underboxer just mentioned a spin-off for Zelda: Breath Of The Wild in the style of The Wind Waker. My first thought was that he meant the art style and maybe he did, but it got me thinking.

Could they just take the exact same game world from Breath Of The Wild and flood the map – a bit like near the end of Super Mario Sunshine. Mountaintops would become islands and there could even be a diving element, perhaps to look for treasure in deep sea caves.

I dont even know if thats possible from a technical perspective but I think that could make a very different game in a much shorter time frame if it was possible.

Dont fight it

Ive seen a lot of criticisms of Red Dead Redemption II over the last few days but while I can understand some of them, particularly around the action, I really do think people are being too down on the game. It reminds of all the complaints about The Witcher 3s combat, which again had a point but clearly didnt stop it from being many peoples game of the generation.

It matters even less in Red Dead Redemption II because combat is generally less frequent and important than The Witcher. Sure, a lot of missions end with it but unless its just me I can go hours without getting into a gunfight and thats when I have the most fun.

Playing Red Dead is like being transported to another world, or at least time, and to me it is an amazing way to relax and explore completely outside of my day to day life. I also think the story is really turning into something interesting, if its going in the direction I think it is, which is much better than GTA Vs very vague plot. Its game of the year for me and by a long marsh.

Free demo

Here is a possibly interesting question: do you think theres a chance well see Deltarune come to consoles any time soon? I havent downloaded it as I only have a little laptop with not much spare memory, so it would be more ideal on a console, for me.

That said, is there any value in Toby Fox doing that? Hes not charging anything for this initial version (which is very good of him) and wouldnt he have to pay a commission or something to get onto the various online stores ran by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo?

In which case, hed need to start charging for it – and I dont think the aforementioned companies would like having a game on their marketplaces entirely free. Yes, Fox has said its a demo and a teaser for something more substantial – but would that fly with the big three?

And I dont imagine that hed want to take a loss and essentially have to subsidise its existence on the consoles. Though I dont imagine the man has to go begging for change any time soon – Undertale no doubt has made him fairly comfortable.

GC: It could probably be added to Undertale as some sort of free DLC for relatively little effort. But we get the feeling that wont happen.

Advance warning

So apparently Sakurai has said that theyve already picked who all the DLC characters are going to be for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Nintendo picked them all. I guess that means no fan polls or anything but does that mean theyre all Nintendo characters or just that Nintendo went out and made deals with third parties as well.

My guess for wholl be in is Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Twintelle from ARMS, Dillon from Dillons Rolling Western, and… Banjo and Kazooie. Rumour or not I still think thats got a good chance. Either that or Minecraft.

Rex and Twintelle are almost guaranteed I reckon but the others do depend on whether they try to put in brand new characters from games we havent seen yet, like the new Fire Emblem or Metroid. They said the only reason Rex and someone from ARMS wasnt in before is that they didnt know about the games when they started but will they get more advance warning for the DLC? Especially as it seems pretty far out.

Slow to copy

Im not convinced PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds is ever going to be mainstream but it does amaze me that over a year after Fortnite: Battle Royale started the only big name competition has been Call Of Duty. Youve got Battlefield V next year and… thats it. Im not especially complaining because having a flood of them would be awful, but it is an oddly slow reaction by the rest of the games industry.

If it was open world role-playing games or something that was really hard to make I could understand it but if youve got a shooter already all you need is a giant map and youre away. Maybe those rumours about Red Dead Online having Battle Royale will be true or maybe publishers are just assuming itll just be a passing fad. Id like to think theyve got integrity and just dont want to jump on the band wagon, but lets face it… thats not the reason.

Historical curiosity

I wonder if the success of Red Dead Redemption II, and to a lesser degree Assassins Creed Origins/Odyssey, will inspire any more historical games? I was always surprised that Assassins Creed in general didnt really create any clones. But I guess publishers only copy something when its easy to do.

We still havent got a definitive game set in Ancient Rome, and I imagine Odyssey means Ubisoft wont get round to that for quite a while. Japan and India still seem obvious ones too, and theres much more to do in Africa beyond just Egypt. Not sure how an Aussie one would work given the limited time frame but one in South America should be easy. Biggest pyramids ever!

Collective disappointment

Ive had enough of Red Dead Dead Redemption II. Ive tried hard to like it and Im not going to wade knee deep into a rant about every aspect which is rubbing a cheese grater on my levels of tolerance but it can be summed up by the fact that the last game I played before Red Dead Redemption II was Astro Bot. A game that Ill happily place high in a list of one of the most fun, enjoyable, charming and innovative games Ive played for years. It never once genuinely annoyed me. It never bored me and I never felt cheated by bad gameplay mechanics. It constantly delighted me.

Red Dead has, however, proceeded to provoke almost continual rants involving far too many abusive words. Ive tolerated it up to the end of Chapter IV and I just cant face another mission, be it a story or even a side mission. Its boring me, I feel cheated by bad gameplay mechanics, and the micro-management is deconstructing my sanity (If he has to constantly eat why does he not have to dash off to a bush to drop his britches?).

Im not anti-Rockstar, and somewhere amongst my annoyance with the game I did occasionally see a beautiful world that theyve attempted to create but if a game has me book in hand, re-reading about collectivisation during the early years of Lenins rule in Russia, whilst I mute the TV, hold X, and have the cinematic camera take me to another yellow dot on the map to partake in another stodgy gunfight Ive reached the end of interacting with it. It has becometh Strictly Verboten to have it on my hard drive. Apologies Rockstar.

PS: P.T. demo still works on my PlayStation 4.

Inbox also-rans

All this hunting in games must stop now, its going too far. Leave animals alone. Its repugnant and shocking and I will not be buying or playing any game it is included in from now on. They should all be ashamed of themselves.

GC: We do sympathise, but a Wild West setting makes more contextual sense than many other games. Plus, you can actually buy all your food and clothes from shops if you want.

Am I the only one thats a little disappointed by Red Dead Redemption IIs soundtrack? I see Rockstar going on about how they have 100 musicians but I havent really noticed any of the tracks making much of an impression on me. I certainly dont remember any individual ones like I did with the first one. Maybe less wouldve been more?

This weeks Hot Topic

The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader gaz be rotten and asks what do you want from the next generation consoles?

It looks increasingly inevitable that the PlayStation 5 and the successor to the Xbox One will at least be announced next year, so what are you hoping theyll be? How much of an improvement do you want and expect from the graphics and are there any features, such as motion controls, VR, or streaming that you think will – or should – become a new standard?

What kind of games do you want to see on the new consoles and what new features do you hope theyll include? What would a new console have to have for you to consider getting it and do you think the next generation is coming too early or about right?
