God Of War - not your father's Kratos

God Of War – whats next for Atreus?

The evening Inbox hears about how readers got their online names, as one reader praises Bloodborne for its minimalist storytelling.

God of plot twists

Now that God Of War has been the most acclaimed game of 2018, completely outpacing Red Dead Redemption II in terms of rewards, what kind of thing are people expecting from the sequel? (Which I guess, confusingly, will be called God Of War 2?)

Theres lots of obvious gameplay things to ask for, like a proper open world, more enemy variety, more weapons, etc. but Im curious to see how theyre going to handle the character of Kratos. The reason the last game worked so well is because a really hateful character turned into a good person but where has got to go after that? How do you make Kratos still interesting if hes already completed his character arc?

I guess the focus is going to be his son and whether hell turn out evil or not, so kind of the reverse of Kratos arc? Without wanting to spoil the ending there are a lot of obvious directions for the story to go and Im curious to see how much theyll go for that and how much is misdirection. Whatever happens the pressure is certainly on now. I dont think anyone expected that much from the game at first but now the sequel is going to be scrutinised to the nth degree.

Compromising on price

Funny to see all the reviews for Nintendo Labo VR be so positive, after many gamers tried to dismiss it as a waste of time. Maybe it is if you havent got kids, or are just miserable, but if the patches for Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Breath Of The Wild work out well I think Ill pick up the Starter Set at least.

VR is clearly still in its infancy so I dont think it really matters all that much if the resolution is slightly lower or the graphics not that detailed. At this point its the ideas and gameplay thats important and as usual it sounds like thats something you can count on Nintendo for.

Which is not to discredit Sony as I believe theyve done an even better job so far, its just I cant afford the PlayStation VR at its current price. Im sure thats whats putting most people off too so something thats a happy compromise between all these issues is very welcome, to me at least.

Writers block

Just a little titbit of news here but someone spotted this job ad for someone at Sucker Punch Productions, for a writer to work on Ghost Of Tsushima. Seems unremarkable enough until you read it and realise theyre implying that most of the writing hasnt been done yet, which suggests the game is nowhere near being finished.

I know theres already been a lot of speculation about it and The Last Of Us Part II being cross-gen but for me this almost confirms it. I dont see how it can come out this year if its nowhere near done yet and if it comes out next year itd be crazy to ignore the PlayStation 5.

Id imagine theres probably even a good chance itll go PlayStation 5-only, although Im not sure Sony would want to risk the fan backlash if that happened. (If anyone cares about the game that much – you dont hear many people talk about it but I thought it looked great.)

Longform storytelling

Saw a new interview with Hidetaka Miyazaki where he was talking about wanting to do a more story-focused game and name-checked Red Dead Redemption II. Id play anything he did to be honest but that made me think back to the rumours of George R. R. Martin writing a game for From. Could these be one and the same games that hes talking about?

Count me in as someone that enjoyed Sekrio but wouldve preferred if it distanced itself a bit more from the Soulsborne games, even if it wasnt strictly one of them. I dont want to see him get stuck in rut or think he has to make a game in a certain way for it to be successful.

Although to be honest I already consider Bloodborne to have one of the best stories in gaming. It may have been told in a non-conventional manner, and most of it can be missed if youre just rushing through it, but I thought it was fantastic. The slow realisation of whats going on and how deep the Lovecraftian influences go was jaw-dropping to me and I loved every second of it.

Melt in the mouth armour

Easter is almost upon us. Chocmageddon. Day of the egg. Season of the rabbit. And I wanted something a little special to risk tooth decay and type 2 diabetes on this year so I wanted to go… luxury.

I first decided to pay the website of Hotel Chocolat a visit. Theres one in Leicester and they are so nice. Expensive, but nice. And yes, there will be something video game related here! Just be patient!

Their chocolate eggs were very tempting but also insanely thick, like more than an inch. Seriously, they were like armour.

Just imagine that in a role-playing game: chocolate plate armour. Bad guys wouldnt know whether to kill you or take a bite out of you, although there are always enemies that are out to eat you in those games. I just have bizarre, horrible thoughts of the bandits in Skyrim stopping to lick the Dragonborns chestplate. Mmm, youre so tasty Dragonborn! Lick, lick, slobber.

Im so sorry for those mental images and also not really.

Long-serving name

I have never actually really told anyone why I came up with my online ID, as it sounded far better at the time compared to the other IDs i was wanting to use. The Gaz part is a shortened version and nickname of my first name, which is Gareth. I didnt want to call myself Gareth Be Rotten as that wouldnt have looked great, so instead used the shortened version Gaz.

The Be Rotten part is essentially a trick to get people to read the username and think something else. Because of the exact words be rotten it is more likely to catch more peoples attention and surprisingly it has worked better than I thought it ever would.

To this day I still use it as I have gotten used to using this and have done so since I first joined both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. I also used this on YouTube as well and have fond memories of debating with gamer SpartanJay back then.

Three little letters

I got my PSN ID from my name, which is Michael. Back in the great days of gaming you could only use three letters for your high score name, etc.

So its basically my name and I have no plans to change it.
