The Witcher 3 – Geralt has got to earn a living too

The morning Inbox looks forward to a new series of new Resident Evil remakes, as one reader complains about Mortal Kombat 11s trailer music.

PLEASE NOTE: Were currently preparing special content to run over the Christmas and new year break, and as usual wed like this to include a number of Readers Features. So if youve been meaning to write one but never got round to it, now would be the perfect time. The topic doesnt have to coincide with the time of year, just anything video game-related that youre interested in and which you think others might be too.

Career twilight

Geralt sure does seem to be doing a lot of cameos lately. He was in SoulCalibur, now hes in Monster Hunter: World, hes got a card game spin-off, hes got a TV series, and Im sure I heard he was in something else as well. Is this the future hes got ahead of him? No major roles, just endless cameos in other peoples games? Like an actor thats past his peek and only appears in movies as a sort of cheesy in-joke?

Personally I dont like it and wish that he ever properly retired or got an actual proper new game. Its like watching Arnie turn up in all these bad B-movies and you just end up kind of feeling sorry for him.

Everything CD Projekt has said suggests there wont be a new The Witcher for years and even when it does happen Geralt probably wont be the lead. The probably means he has a lot more cameos ahead of him, because theyll want to keep the series fresh in everyones minds, but I cant help feel it all seems a bit undignified to me.

Evil factory

The only problem I have with Capcom doing more remakes is how long theyre taking. I know Resident Evil 2 looks great now, but try and remember how long it seemed to be delayed for. We didnt hear anything for two years and many thought it had been cancelled or forgotten.

If thats going to happen its going to take ages before we get back to Resident Evil 4, assuming they stop there and assuming theyll make new original games in-between as well. Or maybe theyve perfected the method now and can make new teams to work on each one. We could be drowning in new Resident Evil games in a couple of years!

Sounds good to me if they keep the quality up and personally I hope they do remake CODE: Veronica. In a way its aged the worse out of all of them because its stuck between the old and new styles. The controls are especially horrible so Id like to see them modernise it all and get people more aware of the story and what I think is a great entry.

Just Battle Royale

The annoying thing about Just Cause 4 being a flop is not how predictable it is but how it could still be a really great game. I only have the third one at the moment but it sounds like its basically the same so Im sure messing around and blowing stuff up is just as fun. The problem is that as soon as you start playing it properly, by doing the story missions, it tries to make itself as boring as possible.

One answer, as GC pointed out, is to get someone else in to create new missions and characters and ditch the old lot. But the other, dare I say better way, is to lean on the multiplayer angle that the more recent games have tried to ignore.

Just Cause seems perfect made for Battle Royale, what with the giant map and all the destruction effects to add a bit of difference. Im sure you could make other modes too where youre competing to blow things up, kind of like what Crackdown 3 looks like. That all seems much more interesting to me than just doing the same thing again with a few new gimmicks.

Gaming zeitgeist

Looks like Nintendo may end up doing very well this Christmas after all, despite all the naysayers. I dont claim to be an expert on the company but the number of times people claim them to be doomed or obviously doing the wrong must be impossible to count by now. I wonder if they ever pay attention to that sort of thing. If they do I can only assume it motivates them at this point.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of those games that on any other system Id say Id pick up when its cheap. But this is a Nintendo game so we know thats never going to happen. Instead I may just end up getting it for Christmas and enjoy being part of the buzz while its all still fresh.

There is definitely an extra thrill to playing a game when its just out and you know millions of other people are playing the same thing all around the world. Its the one flaw with waiting and getting games cheap, especially if theyre multiplayer and while its one worth putting up with its also kind of nice to have an excuse not too.

Onwards and upwards

So this year is nearly at an end and looking back I dont think it has been a vintage gaming year. This was probably to be expected after the highlights of 2017. I do believe though that next year could be very exciting in the world of video games. Everyone already knows about the great start to the year, regarding the release schedule, with a few possible classics being released in the first three months of 2018.

If we are also to expect a lot more news on the specifications and release dates of both Sonys and Microsofts next gen consoles then 2018 could be super exciting. Not forgetting the new digital-only Xbox One and maybe, just maybe, an upgraded version of the Switch.

I also think that Nintendo will have a couple of major game announcements next year. So all in all this year was OK but I am very optimistic that next year will be MUCH better. Merry Xmas to staff, readers, and contributors of GC.

GC: That seems a pretty fair assessment to us.

Its complicated

Reading your review (and causing me to fish out my old PlayStation 2 to play the second game) of the wonderfully odd and genuinely funny Katamari Damacy made me smile in your effort to somehow form a cohesive sentence when describing the frankly sublimely bizarre plot. For some reason it reminded me of this Police Squad scene which even after all these years still makes me laugh, and in a world where Brexit seems intent on deafening me with endless negativity I can find no better alternative than oddball humour and games where you roll things up because the visible universe has disappeared.

John Wheeler coined the phrase it from bit which is basically a holistic view that the universe exists because of participatory interaction. If theres no bits that means theres no its. You need those its to have bits and bits need the its and if that King Of All Cosmos takes out no insurance policy and accidentally destroys the its well… lets say hes taken the bits away and hes beyond a legend (and all known logic) for doing so.

Merry Christmas all you fine folk at the GC Towers.

On the list

Maybe its just me but I get the impression from that Panzer Dragoon annoucement that the developer approached Sega, not the other way around. I bet Sega just shrugged their shoulders and said, Sure, remake it without ever really caring.

Perhaps Im being unfair but somehow I doubt theres a whiteboard back at Sega HQ with some remake master plan that has Panzer Dragoon at the top and Skies Of Arcadia next. But hey, lets dream (cast)!

No sequels

I have to agree with the notion that Doom as a franchise has not moved forward anywhere near as much as I wouldve imagined 25 years ago. To me it doesnt really feel like it had a sequel. Doom II was just a mod really, Doom 3 was an ill-conceived remake, and Doom 2016 was a well-conceived remake. That makes Doom Eternal the first proper sequel and yet I have a hard time believing thats going to be that different to the last one.

It doesnt have to be, the reboot is good, but when Doom was the best thing since sliced bread I always imagined it would become this dominating franchise for years and decades to come. But id Software went straight to Quake and although that was also technically impressive I never liked it as much. It seemed to slippy slidey and the setting was either super abstract or super generic, depending on whether it was odd or even sequels.

Its tempting to describe id Software as just a tech developer but theyve always bee more than that and the Doom reboot proves it, but I dont know if theyre mismanaged or just lack ambition but they never seem to use their own ideas and tech to their full. Im hoping Rage 2 will be a big step forward for them, although it almost seems as if Avalanche are the dominate partner in that relationship.

Inbox also-rans

Its heart-breaking to hear all these stories of PS1 era games have been lost and unable to be remade. Panzer Dragoon Saga is particularly sad because Sega broke up the studio Andromeda and I dont think theres anyone left there to make anything similar.

Is it just me or is that music choice for the Mortal Kombat 11 trailer really bad? Its so slow and boring compared to whats happening on screen.

This weeks Hot Topic

The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader Alberto, who asks whether you consider yourself loyal to anything in gaming?

Is there a particular console or console maker whose products you always buy? Is there a publisher or developer whose games youre automatically interested in just because of their involvement? Or is there a video game series or character that you almost always get regardless of what others have said about it?

Do you defend whatever it is online or do you try to keep quiet in front of others? How do you feel your loyalty is rewarded by the companies in question and have you ever given up on something you were previously loyal to?
