What games are you playing this weekend? (Epic Games)

Todays inbox looks at the best mini-games in Mario Party, while wondering if the Switch is getting overloaded with ports.

Fortnite goes way back

Did an experiment the other day with a really old PC my mate had in his attic and I thought that some people might find it helpful. I installed Fortnite just to see if it would run on a 5+ year old system. Surprisingly, it not only installed but it run fairly well on medium settings with some of the more intensive options turned off. I only played one game and I wasnt that impressed but the screen rarely stuttered and was fine when I was swamped by other players.

I was using an Athlonx2 running at 3.11 GHz (available from CeX for 11p I think) 4GB DDR 2 RAM and a 9800 nvidia graphics card. Has anyone tried it on their *ancient machine? How did you get on? I should also mention that it was Windows 8.1.

Now I didnt have a FPS counter running but I would say that the game was playable and was over 30fps the whole time. The only lag seemed to come when I landed from the parachute.

*ancient for a PC.

SC: Proof Fortnite is operational on literally every machine to ever exist. Well never escape.

Switch shaft

Child Of Light, Saints Row The Third, Valiant Hearts and now Gone Home – Im all for this mass game influx on the Nintendo Switch but shouldnt they be securing some new titles?

Appreciate many wouldnt have played these (admittedly cracking) titles, but Im hoping it wont become a trend where the Switch is shafted and consistently trailing behind the other platforms in bagging new third party releases.

Switching up Diablo

Do you know if the GC guys at Gamescom will be getting hands on with Diablo 3 on Switch? Also, is their any word on a specific release date? Its currently down for Q4 2018.

Cant wait really, especially since its meant to be running pretty much the full fat experience at 60 FPS.

SC: Well have to await our masters box of tricks once he returns from the land of Spatzle. We imagine therell be some Diablo 3 news though in the pipeline.

Sekiro's revenge

To follow-up the letter yesterday, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice actually looks very different to the Souls formula – Id say more than Bloodborne from what Ive seen.

The movement looks like the biggest change, swinging around with the grappling hook and with much speedier enemies which looks like it could be the most challenging yet.

And even if some other bits are similar (collecting souls, dying endlessly etc), its a pretty amazing formula isnt it?

Mario Ultimate Party

With Super Mario Party on the horizon, its got me thinking about my favourite mini-games in the series to lose friends and generally freak out to.

For me, the original Mario Party on Nintendo 64 still has one of the best rosters – especially Slot Car Derby and Bobsled Run. Generally, anything involving buzzing around a track in some sort of vehicle is usually the hot button ticket.

So Im throwing down the gauntlet – whats the best Mario Party mini game ever?

SC: Many basement halycon days were spent playing Mario Party 4 so thatd be our personal favourite. Paths Of Peril and Trace Race #forever.

Hope youve seen the recent footage of RTX in action on Shadow Of The Tomb Raider.

Running on 2080ti game was running at 30-40fps at 1080p, yes you read that right, 1080p.

Nixxes have stated this is early build and requires optimisation of RTX technology, but still….£1200 graphics card that will only run game in RTX mode with that resolution and frame rate, is surely something the beggars belief.

Ray tracing is the future, not sure its the present though.

Take a break

Im glad Ubisoft is learning its lesson and taking another break with Assassins Creed after Odyssey. The quicker big developers learn taking time on a franchise is better than churning out annual clones with incremental updates – the better the whole industry will be.

As someone who wasnt overly taken with Origins, it does worry me what direction the series is taking. Odyssey looks significantly better in some respects, but I definitely feel like its become less about being an actual assassin and instead just a historical simulator with some fighting tacked on.

I guess Im wondering what people would like to see in the future for Assassins Creed, if that conversation hasnt already completely lost hope. (Theyre not getting rid of the Animus, are they?).

This week's Hot Topic

With Gamescom happening this week, almost every video game that will be out for Christmas has been announced and shown to the public. So the question for this weekends Inbox is which ones are you intending to get?

With the possible exception of some, probably minor, Nintendo Switch titles youre probably already very familiar with all the major releases this autumn, so which ones have impressed you the most? Are there any youve already pre-ordered and what others are you interested in?

Which are you waiting for the reviews on and which have you already discounted? How closely do you monitor new games as they edge towards release and do you try to know as much as possible before release or as little as you can? E-mail your comments to: [email protected].
