Fallout: New Vegas – how much do you remember?

Fallout: New Vegas – would Bethesda hand over the keys again?

The evening Inbox thinks Black Ops 4 may justify big budget gaming sequels, as one reader tries to predict the next Nintendo Direct.

New New Vegas

Just saw a tweet from Obsidian that says its very doubtful that theyd ever make a new Fallout, after doing New Vegas. That might have as much to do with these rumours about being bought by Microsoft as anything else but who knows.

The problem is if they dont make a new game then who will. The next Bethesda game is The Elder Scrolls, which is presumably going to take them years and years and while theyve been able to do Fallout 76 as well I assume thats only because its basically just a mod of Fallout 4.

Would they be able to do Fallout 5 alongside Elder Scrolls though? I doubt it. Especially given itd be next gen by then and the graphics need a completely upgrade. But would they give the job to someone else? There are precious few big name developers left that are still independent. But Id love to see what the guys who did Divinity: Original Sin II would do. Especially if it was an isometric game in the style of their other games/the original Fallout. Anyone else have any suggestions? Maybe the Just Cause guys as well? For the open world expertise rather than role-playing.

Big business values

I am really enjoy Blackout, I think it really is something special. You cant say how long the novelty will stay, I know, but I havent stopped playing it since its been out and Ive loved every second of it. Its kind of skewed my views on big budget gaming too. I know it encourages conformity and a lack of new ideas but sometimes those high production values are hard to ignore.

Ive got to hand it to Treyarch, they took the job of making Battle Royale in Call Of Duty and they did the absolute best they could and didnt resort to just copying anything. Battlefield V doesnt sound like a clone either, which I think is really cool.

For every boring sequel and loot box controversy you have a company knocking out top notch games that couldnt exist anyway but with huge budgets and all the corporate meddling that comes with that. Its good to have both of course, indie games to balance them out, but I wouldnt want it to be just one or the other.

PS: When will you have your final review of Black Ops 4?

GC: Were looking at probably Friday.

Song and dance

Nice review of SoulCalibur VI, but it a shame to learn that they still havent really sorted out the single-player properly. No doubt well have that guy that always goes on about SoulCalibur writing in soon enough but what I always think is odd is that nobody just sits these Japanese developers down and explains to them what theyre doing wrong – or at least what it is that Westerners like about their games that they keep ignoring.

Like, I remember GC specifically asking whether SoulCalibur VI would have a cool intro and the guy said it would. But… what was he doing? Lying? Did he not understand the question? Did he think wed think static screens would be cool instead of a CGI intro and a cheesy song (Im assuming theres no song?).

The mission mode is more important of course, but again youd think someone from like Bandai Namco America wouldve suggested that nobodys interested in their stupid story and that having super short fights in this kind of mode has already been annoying in other fighters? I guess they either didnt have the nerve or were just ignored?

PS5 is coming

So I see Sony has been caught advertising for new staff to work on marketing for their next generation consoles. Not much of a scandal perhaps, but the latest in a long line of evidence that the next generation is coming sooner or later. I dont think Sony has ever announced a new console at E3 though. Theyve unveiled it properly/shown off the games but as far as I remember they always announce them earlier at their own event.

Thatd have to mean sometime before June next year and Id assume if we dont start hearing about it, at least in rumours, relatively soon its probably not going to happen. Which means a 2020 reveal/launch is probably much more likely.

I dont know if thats the more popular assumption anyway, rather than next year, but if I was a betting man thats what Id put my money on. Sony have got lots of games still in the pipeline and the PlayStation 4 is still the best-selling console around, so I dont see why thered be any rush. Especially if they can get Microsoft to reveal their hand early (although theyve kind of already done that already with the streaming stuff).

No Mans Starlink

I too was a bit disappointed that Starlink turned out less than stellar. Is there any chance of a No Mans Sky style reboot in the coming months I wonder?

As far as other space operas go, theres still Beyond Good And Evil 2 to look forward to, I think. Help us Michel Ancel, youre our only hope!

PS: I enjoyed Galvanised Gamers purple prose on the subject of Rez Infinite, but has he tried Polybius, which, for my money, is the ultimate trance shooter on PlayStation VR?

DLC blues

RE: No DLC on Game Pass. For me personally it was sizeable strike in the con column when weighing up the value of the service.

Take Fallout: New Vegas, which I was very keen to play, although its now left Game Pass. On that note so has Crackdown, another game I was very interested in trying, which surprised me as I thought it was a Microsoft game.

I hear really good things about the writing for New Vegas, especially a piece of DLC called Old World Blues. For that reason, I would of wanted to try all the story DLC, theres five pieces at £4 each. Its a big game so its unlikely I would of finished it all before it left Game Pass adding another £11.99 (Microsoft store price, like to avoid second-hand if possible).

This scenario of wanting to play the DLC and the prospect of shelling out for the game anyway as it left Game Pass applied to enough games currently on the service that I felt it would probably be a common occurrence with Game Pass games I was interested in.

Double booked

Do we have any idea of when the next Nintendo Direct is going to be? Theres got to be one because they havent announced all the Smash characters yet, but I dont know when they figure the best time for that would be. If it was another company you could probably guess by looking at what others are doing, when game are coming out, and when looks like the best time. But this is Nintendo, I dont think they care about any of that.

What will make me laugh is if its next week, during all the hype for the Red Dead Redemption II launch. I always remember how the first trailer came out the same day as the Switch one and it did better. You can only imagine how furious Rockstar were about that, and what theyd do if Nintendo rained on their parade again.

GC: Theres no clue at all as to when it might be.

Battle Royale narcolepsy

I dont get why people are so hung up on Red Dead Redemption and its sale figures, even before the game has dropped.

This Red Dead Redemption looks absolutely awesome from what Ive seen of it so far and Rockstar always delivers, in my opinion. Their games always move very good amounts and given the success of GTA V/Online, I predict a lot of users will snap up this game too.

Yes, Rockstar dont show a lot of their game in the run up to release. Other developers and publishers advertise their wares all over the place but I feel I anticipate Rockstar products more when Im not spoiled by gameplay reveals and a complete synopsis of the game before its released.

And on a final note. Just a message to some gamers out there… Every game released in this era doesnt need a Battle Royale mode. It gets a bit tiring.
TheInsaneNutter (Xbox One)

GC: A bit tiring? Apart from Call Of Duty there hasnt been any big budget new Battle Royale games so far, and only Battlefield V on the horizon.

This weeks Hot Topic

The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader msv858, who asks where and how do you buy your video games?

With digital downloads becoming increasingly popular are the majority of your purchases digital or for physical discs and cartridges? If you still buy physically then where do you get them from and how do you make sure you get the best deal? Do you buy second-hand and how often do you resell?

For digital downloads how do you reconcile the high prices when not in a sale? Do you pre-order for either method and if all things are equal which do you prefer: physical or digital?
