Pokémon: Detective Pikachu - not a cartoon

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu – not a cartoon

The morning Inbox wonders what Rockstar Games thinks when they play other peoples games, as one reader wishes there was a decent Predator game.

Gotta watch em all

So the Detective Pikachu movie came out and… it looks really good? The CGI seems a bit cheap but I think the general art direction is right and Pikachu himself is super adorable in some shots. More importantly its actually quite funny and goes all in on the what if pokémon were real gag. Which I find to be instantly more interesting than the what if superheroes were real question thats cinema being asking for years.

Ive never played the Detective Pikachu game, which seems to be a pretty obscure spin-off, but I remember the GC review said that it was really good at showing pokémon interacting with a real world city which its obvious from the trailer is what caught the film companys eye. That and the fact that the pikachu can talk (although I still wouldve preferred Danny DeVito as the voiceover).

I cant believe Im saying it but it looks really good and Im definitely going to see it. I particularly like how the main guy isnt a kid, hes a young adult who use to be into pokémon but now has a boring day job. Talking about your meta lapsed gamer metaphor. Ive got a feeling this is going to be big!

Have you seen the trailer for the Detective Pikachu movie? I honestly thought it was some kind of prank when it was first announced, but its very real. While the hyper-real designs of the pokémon looked a bit uncanny valley, I have to admit I was kinda sold on the film by the end. It looks good fun, the humour seems on-point and it looks like it captures the energy of the cartoon well.

Still wish Danny DeVito had been the voice of Pikachu, though.

Detective Pikachu The Movie actually looks… great!

Sometime this month

I know its become a bit of a joke already but I am seriously confused as to when Battlefield V is actually out. I though the first time was this week if you paid for it, but now Im hearing people have been playing it on PC since last week? How much extra did they pay for that?! And the official release date is the 20th? That means the launch will have been dragging on for almost two weeks before its actually out. Can GC clarify any of this?

From online passes to microtransactions why am I not surprised that its EA leading the charge with this latest act of anti-consumer nonsense. And now everyone else is starting to copying them, just the same as always.

Like I remember one reader saying: why cant they just make good games? You make a good game, I pay for it. What is so wrong with that concept? Its not like EA hasnt got good games, this years FIFA was one of the best and Battlefield V does look good… but why all the money-grabbing and penny-pinching? Just take my money and give me the game, dont start trying to get an extra few pound out of me for a head start. Im not a sentient wallet Im a customer!

GC: To be honest were a bit confused ourselves. Were not sure if the version weve got is unique to reviewers or not, but weve had it on console since Friday now. Theres definitely been some PC early access already though, plus the Deluxe Edition on Thursday.

Walking into it

Im getting really worried about Fallout 76 now. Just everything I hear about it sounds such bad news, and the graphics really do look embarrassingly poor. Isnt the rumour that this was meant to be a mode in Fallout 4 that they polished up to turn it into a full game? If it wasnt it sure looks like it. And this is going to be coming out just a couple of weeks after Red Dead Redemption II?!

Bethesda are a great company, and I buy almost all of their games without any question, but theyre also infuriating the way they just walk into trouble that apparently everyone but them can see. They almost feel a bit like Nintendo in that way, except with out the QA department that actually cares about whether their game works or not.

I hope Fallout 76 is good but at the moment that almost seems like Im being naive.

The old problem

I am enjoying Red Dead Redemption II but its still got that old GTA problem of all the missions being go somewhere and kill someone. Except theyve mixed up a bit here so that its just go somewhere and listen to someone talk. Its not an easy problem to solve, Ill grant, but they dont make it easy for themselves by ever mission telling you exactly what to do and where to go at every moment.

I though that was going to be some sort of tutorial thing at first but it never goes away. Go here, do that, dont think. I do think that reader got it right when he said Rockstar dont really seem to like video games that much. Like what do they do when they play other ones? Do they get upset when you can just do whatever you want?

I know you can do that in the open world but when it comes to the actual story missions it might as well be on autopilot really.

Preyed upon

Since the new was a flop and, if Im being honest, not very good I guess thats probably our last chance of ever getting a modern Predator game. Considering the potential the dreadlocked hunter has had a pretty miserable games career, only ever being any good when he turns up to in an Alien game.

Its a shame because all the gadgetry and very flexible lore means you couldve done just about anything with it: story-based action game, multiplayer game, shoot em-up, open world game… any of those wouldve worked. Just imagine a multiplayer game where one person gets to be the predator and everyone else is trying to survive. I think there was even a mode like that in Ghost Recon: Wildlands?

Id rather have a dedicated game though. Oh well, at least the next Halloween film was good. Maybe that could get a good game, like that Friday the 13th one?

Tech demo

Am I the only one that still wasnt that impressed by Crackdown 3? The destruction effects were good, I guess, in a tech demo kind of way but the cel-shaded graphics are so ugly and why is everything still at night? Maybe it could be good but Im going to need quite a bit of convincing.

Why is it that after two years the worlds most powerful console still hasnt got an exclusive to prove that fact thats not Forza? If Microsoft waited till 2021 to release the Xbox Two theyd be dead in the water. Its got to be next year I reckon.

Slow change

Although I agree that Obsidian are a talented developer (never heard of inXile and looking at some trailers Im not sure I want to) but I agree with those saying they just seem a really weird company to buy when youre one of the biggest companies in the world and youve got a blank cheque from their boss. X018 was quite fun but Im not sure Im looking forwards to half an hour of on-stage antics trying top pretend that turn-based combat is the new spectator sport.

Im not having a go at the games, I have enjoyed some in the past, but it all seems a bit low key and unexciting. I mean, computer role-playing games are about the most conservative genre there is, next to fighters. Maybe if theyre going to lean more into something more visual like South Park that could be interesting but everything at the moment suggest theyre going to do something super old school just so Microsoft can get to say they allow their studios full freedom and everything. I mean, as long as they dont treat them like Rockstar Im not sure I really care.

I think Im starting to sound too negative now but Ive never seen a company change direction so slowly. Its five years now since the Xbox One reveal and although Phil Spencer and co. have been talking the talk for years now still nothing has happened. Forza is still the only good game and the only thing we have to look forward is more Halo, Gears, and Fable. I cant help but think they couldve done more with the time and money at their disposal.

Havent played it on Switch (cant imagine it wouldnt work perfectly) but would definitely recommend Forgotton Anne to anyone, one of the real hidden gems of the year.

Just knowing theyre working on a new Zelda has got me excited. I hope its nothing any of us could have imagined, just like last time.

This weeks Hot Topic

The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader Gilo, who asks whats your favourite open world game?

With Red Dead Redemption II just out, and games ranging from Zelda: Breath Of The Wild to Assassins Creed Odyssey offering up some of the largest and most interactive worlds ever seen in a video game, we want to know which is your favourite game featuring an open world environment.

What does a good open world add to a game and what do you find are its limitations? How would you like to see this style of game evolve in the future and do you think there are too many at the moment or not enough?
