Merry Christmas everybody!

Merry Christmas everybody!

The evening Inbox wonders if next years Call Of Duty will have a story campaign, as one reader links to some last minute Xmas bargains.

PLEASE NOTE: The main GameCentral team are now off on holiday for two weeks, with normal service resuming on Monday, January 7. Therell still be a new feature up every day though, as well as the Hot Topic this weekend, so do stick around and have yourself a very merry Christmas!

Seasons greetings

Just wanted to write in with a last message of the year and wish GC and all its readers a very merry Christmas. Its been a funny year for games – some good, some bad, and a lot of disappointments but overall I think its been positive and Ive definitely enjoyed reading about it all on GC.

That includes all the reviews and features (loved Below this morning, just the sort of insightful discussion Ive come to expect here) and of course the Inbox. Considering what gamers are like in general online it is a blessed relief to visit the Inbox and rest of GC and see some intelligent discussion where argument doesnt end in death threats and tantrums.

So I guess GC are off on their usual break now so Ill look forward to all the holiday content and see where January and the new year takes us. If the release schedules are anything to go by then it should be gaming Shangri-La…

Superheroic non-effort

Completing agree with the guy mocking Sony for saying Spider-Man is the best-selling superhero game in the US (why not world? Does that mean its beaten by some Japanese thing?). Its almost like the claim is mocking us fans for the fact that there are no other superhero games.

Hopefully thats going to change now that Spider-Man has been such a hit but Ive still yet to see any evidence that Sony has access to any of the other heroes. Because it certainly would be a hell of a thing if they got exclusive console access to Marvel.

There is DC but, as pointed out, they have completely squandered their lead with the Batman games. I think we all assumed that they would start doing other characters as well and that while Marvel ruled the cinema DC would begin to rule games. But no, in fact theyve made even less games since and now dont even do Batman. Its crazy.

Giant(-Man) potential

I dont usually like superhero movies but after watching the second Ant-Man film recently I really enjoyed it.

This led me to think how cool an Ant-Man video game would be. Miniaturisation and magnification would be great mechanics to use in a game. If the player could dramatically change size even the most mundane location could become a fascinating backdrop to an arcade adventure or a platform game.

Did Ant-Man feature in the Lego Avengers game? Is Ant-Man even part of the Avengers? I must admit to having limited interest in the superhero genre, but even I believe that there should be more superhero games.

GC: Yes, hes been in the Lego games and is an unofficial Avenger at least. Many have commented on how well a game would work based on him (or at least shrinking in general) but theres never even been a hint at one.

All or nothing

Im going to be very curious to see whether next years Call Of Duty actually does have a story campaign or not. It seems to me that what they were planning for Black Ops 4 was more of a story lite co-op anyway so I have a hard time imagining were ever going to get something like WWII again.

I think its just become outdated expecting that sort of thing in an online shooter though. Battlefield Vs campaign is actually really good, especially the new Nazi one, but I bet less than half the people actually play it. They should just make a separate single-player game and put it all into that, rather than splitting their efforts like that.

Complaining about complaints

I dont know what to think when I read things like I seem to be spending more time in the menus setting up spirits and stuff than actually fighting in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I mean, there is literally a button you press and it does it for you. So if youre setting them up yourself it must be because you want to and are really into it?

I mean, not to have a go at that individual but so many complaints about video games dont seem to make sense when you get someone to try and explain them. Smash Bros. is full of it. People saying they know trophies dont do anything but they want them back anyway? What? In place of something that does do something? It doesnt make any sense to me!

God of feels

I have only been playing God Of War a short while, after buying it in a recent PlayStation store sale, but oh my word was it worth the wait.

With God Of War I have found myself engrossed in the characters and story but thats not normal for me. I am the kind of gamer who isnt interested in story. I prefer to immerse myself in the gameplay. My love of Bayonetta is purely related to feeling more and more adept.

The combination of superb gameplay, incredible art direction, writing and design has me totally engrossed.

Just how long do you think they spent making it feel so utterly perfect when the axe is recalled to Kratos hand? It never gets old!

End of year report

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to GC and all its readers! Looking forward to stopping work today and then Ive got till Thursday off which should be great for some hardcore video-gaming and eating. My two favourite things!

I guess well get into what kind of a year 2018 has been in January, once weve had a time for a bit of perspective but I think its been generally good if not amazing. Enjoyed my time on GC though, as always, and look forward to the spring games rush next year!

Spirit of Christmas

This letter is not meant to be a downer, it is more about appreciation for what you have and the help and friendship of people on my friends list going back to the Teletext days. I myself have had long-term health issues involving lots of blood transfusions and ops. I went into my local town to get my dad a special gift as he had just been diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia (sadly not treatable). I collapsed in town due to blood loss and came round in hospital… with my wallet missing.

After a few days I got back home, as I dont have a phone with the Internet, to find someone had gone on a spending spree on my credit card and had also gone on a spree buying things under £30 so the PIN number was not needed.

I happened to message someone about an offer I had seen (Amazon buy three months of Xbox Live and get £10 credit for the store) and he asked why I had not been gaming and I explained. He told other people on his list we both knew and so on. These people have been on my list since friends list started and all from the Teletext days. Over the next 48 hours messages came of offers in the form of money, iPads, you name it.

I cried most of last week but was now crying at the kindness. Not just from old friends but people I had not met who they must have told. All offers were turned down as I explained, without wanting to cause offence, that they were only material things and if they had a spare quid give it to cancer research or charity of their choice. (I sound a right goody two-shoes but I am not!)

Im just a normal bloke and the point of this letter was to say thanks to those people and show the power of a friends list and to say just be thankful for what you have and appreciate it and everyone in your lives, as you dont know when that will be taken from you. And if you drink have a drink for me as I cant drink.

Thank you everyone on my list who contacted me, I love you all and thanks to the random people as well. If you have a spare quid drop it in a rattling tin. And thanks GC and merry Xmas to you as well. All the best!

This weeks Hot Topic

As the last Hot Topic before Christmas the subject for this weekends Inbox is what game have you enjoyed the most this year that wasnt released in 2018?

Well do our usual Readers Top 20 in the new year but what was your favourite game this year that came out before 2018? It can be from any time period, from this gen to the 8-bit era, but what did you enjoy the most and why?

How often do you play older games and was your favourite something youd played before, or was it perhaps part of a backlog? Or is it something you picked up for cheap and youre just now catching up on recent releases?
