Do you have a man cave?

The Morning Inbox wonders how much advance planning went into Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, as one reader remembers Ultima Underworld.

Man cave etiquette

I know the whole man cave thing is a bit of cliché but Im just curious as to how many people actually have one, or at least a room they always play games in that isnt the living room? Were moving house soon and we will have a spare room thats not a bedroom and I am very much thinking of asking the wife to turn it into a games room. Is that an unusual thing to want when youre a grown man?

Theres something strangely exciting about the concept but at the same time I think Id feel guilty if I was sat in there all day ignoring everyone else. Does anyone have any experience of their own and the basics of games room etiquette?

Im think of saying that Ill only spend a max of two hours in there at a time but I dont know if thats too much or too little or just silly. Im also thinking of getting a projector for the room instead of a TV, so I can play Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare on as big a screen as possible.

Future influence

Im glad you mentioned The Terminator: Future Shock in your Ion Fury review, as that game never gets enough credit for everything it did. It had proper 3D enemies and buildings you could go in and out of long before Quake even came out. Im sure it must have been the inspiration for Bethesda to buy Fallout because it was all set in the future and I dont understand why it was never a hit at the time.

Maybe it was just ahead of its time because it was quite slow paced and modern seeming, rather than like the arena shooters that were more popular at the time. Personally I never really liked Quake and was glad when shooters started to take their setting more seriously and evolved into action role-players like Deus Ex and System Shock.

I also dont think the influence of Ultima Underworld can be understated as that was doing almost proper 3D very early on. It was a technical masterpiece at the time but again has been largely forgotten today. Its funny how that can happen to even the most influential games.

Sleeping giant

So Ive got a question about Stadia, which I hope is going to be answered on Monday when they have their new Nintendo Direct thing. Are there going to be Stadia exclusive games? I think like many people I assumed that Stadia was just running PC games but its not, its actually specific versions of the various games made for their own platform… which seems unnecessary to me, but whatever.

They seemed happy to let people assume Baldurs Gate III was an exclusive but it turned out it wasnt and neither were any of the other games they mentioned. But are other ones going to be? I think it must be inevitable and that is really going to mix things up. I get the impression that a lot of people are sleeping on Stadia at the moment and have kind of discounted them, but its Google… theyre going to have tons of money to throw at this.

Whether that ends up being a good or a bad thing for gamers well have to see but in theory the more competition and the more variety the better. Just imagine if they drop some bombshell like a deal with Rockstar or someone. They do have the money for it…

Loot box era

Read that interview with the Borderlands 3 guy and he never really answered the question about why not just do big story-based DLC and leave it at that. Rather than making tons of little DLC extras and microtransactions. It is odd how companies seem all over the place on this issue but I would be very happy if after this loot box nonsense we went back to the idea of just having big chunky expansions.

Games like The Witcher 3, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Splatoon 2 have all done this very well and Ive been happy to hand over my money. Although I always thought the argument against them was that they dont make that much money and thats why publishers gave up in the first place.

Or maybe people were just fed up with all the bad ones and actually theyre fine paying for the good ones. It certainly seems better value for money and more honest, so itd be nice if that came back into fashion for at least a while.

Field of one

I am looking forward to Control when it comes out at the end of the month but Im still disappointed theres not going to be another Quantum Break, especially as the first game ended on a cliffhanger (considering how many games do this and dont get a sequel, maybe… dont in the future?). Also, Microsoft were claiming it was their fastest selling new IP when it came out, so doesnt that count for something?

The answer, obviously, is no but I still think its a shame. Lots of people didnt like the live action stuff but I thought it really helped the story and made me a lot more invested in it. It was something different and I always appreciate that. I hope Control is at least as daring.

Future planning

While I agree that Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare is going to be hugely controversial and possibly cause new laws to be made in America I also think its going to be absolutely huge, like as big as it ever was. I know they didnt plan it knowing the political situation now but it looks like its going to work out perfectly for them.

What I do wonder though is how much they planned out the whole franchise. We had all those years were the games were set in the near future and people were getting fed up of them. But did they do that on purpose so that when they did go back to the current day everyone would be really excited for it again and hyped up at the return?

That is a lot of forward planning but it does make sense. But am crediting them with too much and it was all just luck? Do companies think more than a couple of games ahead? Im sure theyd claim they do when things work out but is it really true? Well probably never find out.

Information blackout

I see a few Astral Chain previews have turned up online, but not many. Im not sure what that means. Does GC have a copy yet? Platinum have never let me down before (well, except for those cheap Activision games) but I find it very worrying that weve heard virtually nothing about it before. It wasnt at E3 and has barely been mentioned by Nintendo.

If that was any other company Id take that as a guarantee that it was a dud but because this is Nintendo were talking about who knows. I hope its good, seems like ages since theyve released a new game.

GC: Our copy only arrived on Wednesday, which we believe was also the case for most UK sites. Although at least that means the review should be ready before launch.
