Battlefield V – are you still excited?

The evening Inbox asks argues over Destiny 2s value for money, as one reader has a long rant about Star Wars: Battlefront II.

Phony war

The decision to push Battlefield Vs release date back is undoubtedly a prudent one, yet it is one that has left me very upset. I really enjoy multiplayer games, most of my gaming time is spent playing multiplayer and this has left me with a 30 game backlog of single-player games, but there are only a very small number of games I enjoy. Multiplayer gaming has been getting a little stale for me, and I was really expecting Battlefield V to reinvigorate my gaming.

The hoopla surrounding the presence of women in the game and its historical accuracy all seemed a little silly and pedantic to me. I really dont care about historical accuracy in my games, and I enjoy playing as a woman in games. As such it was all a non-issue for me.

The biggest issue for me is that Ill probably have to get Black Ops 4 to satiate my multiplayer thirst, and I promised myself I wouldnt. The bordering on illicit implementation of the DLC immediately made me reluctant to purchase the game and a less than great experience with the beta only reinforced that reluctance. I know its only a month but I really need something new to play. Heres hoping the beta will be good.

Scarily attractive

I wasnt planning on playing the Resident Evil 2 remake as I find scary games quite stressful, I try to avoid stressful situations. But after reading your preview and watching some videos on YouTube Im now super excited to play an old PlayStation classic.

One thing that Im surprised by is how visually impressive the game looks. In recent times Ive got the impression the Japanese developers arent so interested in impressive graphics but this game looks stupendous! Hopefully I can keep my stress levels under control when it gets released.

Elementary puzzles

Great work with the Resident Evil interview and Im looking forward to the release of the new game. It got me thinking about the games as a whole and Im wondering if anyone has the same issue with them as me? Ive owned nearly every Resident Evil (at least once!) except the second one. However, the only game I ever completed was Resident Evil 4 – probably for obvious reasons in that it wasnt very hard compared to the rest.

I genuinely love the games and how at their best they scare the bejeezus out of me. But there always seems to come a point in them that Im running around in circles button mashing, looking for some stupid artefact to open a door somewhere that just never seems to materialise. I hate using the Internet to cheat my way out of it so I just do what any weak man would and quit.

I just wish they wouldnt make things so hard to find. I personally dont buy Resident Evil games to act like Sherlock Holmes I just want to sit in a dark room completely terrified! Im clearly a weirdo though.

Looking forward to Red Dead Redemption II like everyone else.

The amazing Cyperpunk

Ive been left bemused by the ongoing debate over Cyberpunk 2077s graphics. I was left gobsmacked the moment it opens out into a bustling cityscape, which showcased the sort of detail you only associate with an open world Rockstar game. It looked on another level to me.

I do get some of the criticism over Spider-Man, which has seen some obvious downgrades in lighting, texture work, and detail. But it still looks great! Better a developer sacrifices some assets to maintain a steady framerate than be over ambitious at the expense of gameplay.

Thank you letter

RE: r-s-w (PC) and UnEreD (gamertag). Well, I would just like to say a big thank you guys for the invaluable advice you gave me on Friday morning it was very, very much appreciated and definitely a big heads up! The PC that I mentioned however is actually a Stormforce Onyx AMD A10 8GB RAM not a Zoostorm, sorry my mistake.

The original price was £600, it went down to £529 in a sale then if you ordered it from Very you also got another £100 credited back into your account. So this brought the actual price down to £429! The 23″ monitor is made by BenQ, again my mistake.

Well, this is one of the reasons I still read these very same pages on a daily basis since the old days of Digitiser, because the community on here is phenomenal theres always somebody who will go the extra mile to try and help another reader out!

Entertainment per hour

Nice to see Destiny 2 free on PS Plus this month as it gives me an opportunity to try it. I dearly miss Halo multiplayer from my Xbox-owning days and I hear nothing but good things about the core shooting mechanics of Destiny 2.

Ive not given it a go yet due to time, finding the game world a bit bland but most of all the game and its expansions strike me as being hideously overpriced, almost exploitative.

A quick check on the store and the expansion pass for Destiny 2 is currently £15. I imagine with new blood from going free there will be lots of new guardians looking to play the original expansions. The upcoming Forsaken expansion along with the annual pass, the reason why Destiny 2 is being offered free right now, is £60. So even with the base game being free, if I do find I really like it and want more Im still looking at £75 to get everything from the game.

A work colleague got the digital deluxe version for Destiny 2 when it released, which comes with expansions, it cost £80 at the time and now hes going to fork out another £60 for Forsaken with the annual pass. Thats on top off Bungie saying they would support Destiny for a long time but basically binned it and asked everyone to start again with Destiny 2.

Ive havent played the game yet so I cant say if the content provided is worth the price but it strikes as a very expensive game to enjoy fully.

GC: Whatever criticisms there may be of Destiny 2 we dont think value for money is one. Many people, even those that end up not liking it, end up playing for hundreds of hours even without the expansions. Compare that to two hours at the cinema for roughly £10.

Switch Point

Im so glad they didnt ruin my memories of Theme Hospital, with great reviews coming out for Two Point Hospital.

Now, if only Inbox Magic could rustle up a Switch port, itd be amazing. Touchscreen and portable play sound like a match made in heaven for this game!

Laying down the lore

Im emailing in response to the article regarding EA/DICE and Star Wars: Battlefront. This may be long-winded.

The horrendous launch debacle of their loot box cash-grabbing monetisation resulted in several countries and states investigating loot boxes as a form of gambling, of which some have decided loot boxes are and several games have had to change the way they do items in the game because of this; Blizzards Overwatch for instance. To be honest, even trading cards could be seen as gambling in this regards. It was a huge backlash which I hope serves as a lesson in the future to all that when you toy around with something as loved or well known as Star Wars, even in good intentions, it can end up destroying you.

Their constant lack of ability to give the live service they promised, which has resulted in several annoying game-breaking bugs; several people on PC suffer from a sound glitch, causing all game sound to mute and the only way that can be fixed has been to restart the game. I myself, since the very launch of the game, have yet to have an Achievement be fixed in game and the rewards of the Achievement given. I had reported this broken achievement and was told it was a known issue and would be addressed in an upcoming patch. But several patches later of course it has not been. There is an entire history of broken guns, hero abilities, and more, with each patch meant to fix the last issues but it ends up bringing back old ones or creating new ones. How is it so hard to test these patches before putting them into motion?

The way their business executives reportedly act towards the actual programmers and designers of the game reflects a poor attitude towards the gamer community as a whole. I remember reading a report of an ex-employee who described one executives opinion of players as, lazy, jobless layabouts that live in their mothers basements. From what I read it would appear that the people actually working on the game know what we want and are willing to do it but are being told to do otherwise by their bosses.

It has been very obvious to me that EA/DICE have squandered their opportunity. With a callous view of the gaming community, after giving the still famous comment of no one cares anymore for single-player games. Yet, several single-player games have received much more praise than what theyve attempted. It is very obvious to nearly any gamer that EA/DICE, or at least those in control of whats going on in there, believed that simply by slapping the name Star Wars onto anything they could turn it into profit. The first Battlefront literally felt like nothing but Battlefield with a Star Wars makeover. This second one feels like what the first one should have been to begin with. They have done Star Wars a disservice by treating it as a quick cash score.

There was a brief moment when people told EA that if they wanted to have loot boxes, then make them cosmetics, but EA responded that cosmetics for this game was hard pressed, because they had to stick to lore: A pink clad Darth Vader, while funny, doesnt fit right. This is ridiculous. Sure, lore is fine, but they allow Rey to fight Darth Maul, and even further, give both of them voice lines that speak about the other. I wouldnt be surprised if theres a few fun choice lines Anakin and Darth Vader will say to each other once Anakin is released, but thats not lore friendly either.

The point though is this: no one cares about lore in a game where players spend 20 to 30 minutes in a linear, objective-filled battle then wipe the slate clean and move to a new planet to repeat the same kind of objective-filled battle. Lore has no place in the battles! Ergo, give people skins to have fun. Would it not be fun to see a pink Darth Vader stalking down the hallways of the Death Star? If youre going to be a stickler over lore, then make a single-player game. Oh wait… no ones interested in those anymore right? Thats why we cancelled those ones that had been in development right?

Recently, there was another disturbing set of events regarding a class that many players have wanted, the Droideka. In a piece of art that was released for their new skins for clone troopers, hidden in a corner, was what people clearly found and determined to be a Droideka.

At first, EA denied that it even was a Droideka, saying it was clutter or debris that was just shaped like one, but later confirmed that yes, it was actually an unused asset prop of a Droideka. This was followed by the news that this was a static prop, it was missing rigging, animations, sounds, abilities, and so much more. And that there were reportedly no plans whatsoever to include this class in the game.

This further confirmed that while there is a model for the Arc Troopers that run through Kamino, they will never be seen as a replacement for the wookie for the clones. And the wookie will continue to dominate all eras for Clones, Rebels, and Resistance.

This was the final nail in the coffin for me. It confirms that EA/DICE refuses to listen to what the community is telling them, and further illustrates an inability to understand that community. Even with new heroes, one new map, and a new game mode, the only thing that could possibly revive this game is if the new game mode is amazing. Even then though, I refuse to pick this game back up. I for one wont give them any more of my time.

There are several other games I can give my time to instead, with developers I know respect my time as a player. If EA/DICE make a Battlefront III, I similarly wont be touching it. I had pre-ordered Battlefront II and probably like many I regret deeply that I gave my attention to this disrespectful company.

In regards to the movies and the like, I view the movies as I do the books. They are good in their own right. May they be canon? Sure, but once upon a time the books were canonical too. We can enjoy the good and bad things of both and choose to understand both of their timelines. However, let Battlefront and EA/DICE serve as a warning, to even Disney: Star Wars is what it is because of its fans. If you upset those fans, you wont have a franchise left to make money on.

Great interview with the Resident Evil 2 guys, GC. If they do end up making a Dino Crisis remake you should get a spot on the credits!

Reading your Resident Evil 2 article got me drooling so much I had to set up the Dreamcast to play it.

This weeks Hot Topic

The subject for this weekends Inbox was suggested by reader Gannet, who asks what game have you beaten the greatest number of times?

It doesnt matter how old the game is or whether its exactly the same version every time (it can be the same game but on different formats) but which game have you beaten again and again (including New Game+) and still enjoyed? What makes it so replayable and are you still finding new things each time you play it?

Do you often replay games or is this one an anomaly amongst your collection? Do you consider replayability to be an important part of the gaming experience or do you generally only play them once to completion?
