He might sing to sell-out crowds of tens of thousands of people, but Ed Sheeran has admitted that he suffers from crippling anxiety which makes it hard to trust people and even spend time in public.

The Thinking Out Loud singer spoke candidly as he promoted his new album, No. 6 Collaborations, as he revealed how he copes with his anxiety.

He said I get anxiety every day. It creeps up on you. Ive been working on it for eight years and I closed off from reality.

Whether its getting rid of your phone or only looking at emails twice a day. Or cutting down my friendship group to the bare minimum just so I can trust everyone.

Ed admitted that he chooses to live a very private life because he finds people wanting to take photos of him all the time hard to cope with.

I have social anxiety. I dont like large groups of people, which is ironic given I play shows to thousands of people, he continued.

But its when people film me and stare at me. It makes me feel weird.

It makes me feel like Im not human. If you want to come up to me and have a conversation with me. Even if weve never met, just come up.

But what instantly cuts me off is that youre having a moment with them which is so genuine and so nice and then at the end they ask for a picture.

It puts you down to earth and youre just 15 likes on Instagram. Thats all you are.

The Sing star revealed that he finds going out difficult now, due to his level of fame and has to make special arrangements in order to enjoy his nights out.

He said: If I am eating in a restaurant now, I would prefer to have a private room because if I eat in the public room I have people filming me while Im eating my food.
