Dragons Dogma 2: Will Capcom make a sequel after Devil May Cry 5? Release Date news

DS

Dragons Dogma is an action role-playing hack and slash video game.

It was developed and published by Capcom for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012.

A year later an enhances version called Dark Arisen was released, and in 2016 it was available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

The game is set in the fantasy world of Gransys, where the player must take on the role of Arisen, a human who sets out on a quest to defeat the Dragon.

The main character has AI companions, known as Pawns. One Pawn is customised, while three more are pre-set.

The pawns can fight independently, and learn skills and have traits learned from the player.

The original release of the fantasy game was generally well-received by critics.

While the general narrative was criticised, that said the Pawn system was largely praised.

A year after release Capcom released 'The Dark Arisen', an enhanced version of the game with improved graphics which was also largely praised for its extra technical improvements and additional content.

Will there be a sequel?

The director of Dragons Dogma, Hideaki Itsuno, seemed to have a plan to make a sequel in 2013.

When asked about a possibility of a sequel by the Japanese Play Community website, he said: “In my head, I have a story and setting for the next one, but its not one that can be easily done.

“For example, voices say coming for PS4! and it seems to happen quite a lot. The possibility to be able to make it might to be growing.

“Inside of me there are a lot of things I want to make, and because there are already concepts, there might be a chance! I have a feeling.”

While it sounded like a sequel would be a long time off, producer Minae Matsukawa said in 2016 a sequel could still happen.

She told PC Gamer: “The Dragons Dogma development team members often talk about the possibility of a sequel.”

Matsukawa added that it depends on the feedback given for the PC version of Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen.

The feedback was generally positive, and Matsukawa said positive feedback “will increase the chances that we can look into the possibility of continuing the series.”

While a direct sequel is questionable, the game did get a follow-up online RPG game.

However, Dragons Dogma Online was only available on PC, PS3 and PS4 in Japan.

The action-RPG came sees players defend the land of Lestania as one of the “Arisen”.

Dragons Dogma Online was launched in 2015, and over one million people downloaded it in the first 10 days.

Sadly, fans outside Japan can still not play the online RPG game.

Capcom had originally planned to release the game worldwide, but changed its name because the growth in the PC market had slowed down.

How long could we be waiting for Dragons Dogma 2?

While there may still be hope for Dragons Dogma 2, we will likely be waiting a while for it.

Intsuno is currently working on Devil May Cry 5, which is due for release in Spring 2019.

Fans were hoping for Devils Dogma 2 when he revealed he was working on something new in 2016.

He tweeted: “Happy New Year! I exert myself in order to announce a new game this year. Thank you.”

Fans were quick to jump to conclusions – either Dragons Dogma 2 or Devil May Cry 5.

While it was Devil May Cry 5 this time, we cant rule out Itsuno moving on to Dragons Dogma 2 later.
