Crash Team Racing – speeding towards a remake?

The Game Awards looks like its going to get another new game reveal, in the form of the best Mario Kart game never made.

As soon as Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy became one of the biggest games of the last few years it was a question of when, not if, Activision got round to a remake of Crash Team Racing.

First released for the original PlayStation in 1999, the game is widely considered the best Mario Kart clone that has nothing to do with Nintendo and was the last Crash Bandicoot game to be worked on by original creators Naughty Dog – now better known for Uncharted and The Last Of Us.

The news started with a leak on 4Chan, which stated the remake will be developed by Vicarious Visions, who also did Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, and will be released next autumn.

Since there was no proof it was largely ignored, even with the little detail that Josh Mancell will be returning to help remaster the music.

For all the Crash fans out there, this is interesting for a few reasons:

– Orange card written in a similar fashion to the one included w/ Spyro eggs
– Orange fuzzy dice, typically hung in cars
– An emphasis on "sliding" in

So, yeah – we're looking at Crash Team Racing, folks. https://t.co/JOaz6eErVs

But then Activision started sending, for no obvious reason, Crash Bandicoot-branded cookies to various influencers in America. Before then switching to orange fluffy dice and a mention of The Game Awards on Friday.

So clearly Activision are going to reveal something, even if the provable connection to Crash Team Racing is fairly tenuous.

Except, Eurogamer claims to have inside knowledge that it really is Crash Team Racing that theyre hinting at.

Thats great news for Crash fans, although unlike Activisions previous retro remakes this would only be one game. And one which may not seem as fresh now as it did in 1999, especially given how much Mario Kart has changed over the years.

Still, its yet one more reason to look forward to Friday…
