Catherine Tyldesley has opened up about her body hang-ups, and we love her for it.

The former Coronation Street actress – who is fronting On The Beachs free family swimming sessions campaign – is desperate to get people in the swimming pool, and having some fun.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, the 35-year-old was honest about her own figure, insisting no one looks like a model when splashing around in the water.

Weve all got our body hang-ups, but what we have to remember is that nobody looks like an airbrushed Instagram picture around the swimming pool, she told us. [Were] all shapes and sizes, were all human.

Im so glad I was part of the last generation that grew up without phones, without social media. The pressure on people is unbelievable. All my Instagram pictures, none of them have been airbrushed – not that Id know how, Im the least technical person!

I love a filter as much as the next person, but theyre not airbrushed. Ive got young cousins, I dont want them to think thats the norm, and that people look like that.

Thats a big thing in peoples heads, theyre constantly seeing pictures of perfection in swimsuits.

Honestly, so much yes.

Catherine – who is mum to four-year-old son Alfie – also revealed she has been through days she doesnt feel great, but forgets all about her insecurities after just a few laps.

Its about realising that, when you walk up to your local leisure centre or swim at beach, everybody is normal. All wonderful shapes and sizes, everybody looks different. Everyones just having fun. And thats what its about, she continued.

I have days where I dont feel great in a swimsuit. But Ill go to the edge of the pool, drop my towel or sarong at the last minute, Ill get in and once Im in, I feel great. Once Ive done a few laps, I feel even better about myself. I get out and Im not bothered about putting the towel back around me. The benefits are just endless.

Ive got wobbly bits, Ive got stretch marks. Im getting in [the pool] with my son and having such a laugh. Were getting fit at the same time, were building up our confidence, and just having the best time.

Not only are the health benefits absolutely endless, its extremely therapeutic and raises serotonin, it raises endorphins in the brain. When Im swimming, I switch off, which is really therapeutic for me, its a bit of stress relief. It can be extremely relaxing.

Catherine has teamed up with On The Beach over their free family swimming sessions, something she branded a no brainer.

I wanted to get involved straight away, I think its a brilliant idea. Swimming has always been something Ive loved, and it has always been very important to me to instil. Alfie was six-weeks-old when we first took him in the pool, she added. And its something I do all the time.

I think, in this day and age, especially with all the technology that weve got, unfortunately statistically it has been proved people are spending more time on their phone or tablets around the pool, than they are actually getting in.
