The original Command & Conquer could be about to make a comeback, as EA producer Jim Vessella reveals that the publisher is exploring some exciting ideas for the series 25th birthday in 2020.
Vessella posted his comments on the Command & Conquer subreddit, where he implied that the remasters would only be for the PC and were an apology of sorts for mobile game Command & Conquer: Rivals – whose unveiling did not go down well with long term fans of the franchise.
Following the reveal of Rivals, we heard you loud and clear: the Command & Conquer community also wants to see the franchise return to PC, wrote Vessella.
And as a fan of C&C for over 20 years, I couldnt agree more. With that in mind weve been exploring some exciting ideas regarding remastering the classic PC games, and already have the ball rolling on our first effort to celebrate the upcoming 25th Year Anniversary.
He mentioned talking to fans over the next few weeks but theres no more indication of exactly what hes thinking of, other than he does says games in the plural – so that probably means at least Red Alert too.
His implication that theyd only be remasters is surprising though, as the original games are so old that a full remake would seem to be in order – especially if this is a project thats going to take two more years.
Perhaps he was just using the term remastering in a more general sense, as simply upping the resolution isnt going to be much of an anniversary celebration.
Of course, its easy to imagine that all this effort might mean an actual new game is coming too, and not just Rivals. But its worth bearing in mind that EA has tried to reboot the franchise a number of times in recent years and in each case ended up cancelling the project.
