Older and wiser? The Cold Feet crew return for an eighth series (Picture: Rex)

Youll know her best as Cold Feets Jenny Gifford, but Fay Ripley may well have been known for singing as well as acting if shed just said yes to Simon Cowell.

Ripley has revealed she was offered a recording contract by The X Factor and Britains Got Talent moguls record company, but ultimately decided to pass on the offer.

Theyd seen me play a singer in a thing called I Saw You and wanted me to make an album, Ripley told the Radio Times, throwing back to 2002 when she played a single mum in the ITV drama, which also starred Pointless host Alexander Armstrong and The Crowns Tobias Menzies.

I Saw You marked her first major TV role after she originally quit Cold Feet and it clearly made quite the impression on Cowells crew at the time.

Ripley and Jerome just didnt have the same ring to it for Fay, who said no to singing (Picture: Rex)

Why did Fay say no to the chance to see life imitate art? Well, its quite simple really.

I didnt want to be like Robson and Jerome and Im not that good a singer, she explained, but what I wouldnt do now to have a little singalong.

Sticking to the day job seems to have worked out rather well for Ripley, though. Shes still on out TV screens and her Cold Feet character, Jenny, has a major role to play in the shows upcoming eighth series as she faces a cancer scare.

More: Simon Cowell

Speaking at a screening of the first episode, she explained that she was very eager for the shows writers to make sure the story was as true to life as possible for the sake of those who were dealing with cancer in real life.

We have seen this story with shows but I wanted it to be real, she said. Sometimes its going to be funny, sometimes its going to be scary. I just wanted it to be honest.

Cold Feet series 8 starts January 2019 on ITV1.
