Sony announced today that it would be allowing crossplay support for Fortnite, meaning that players on PS4 can play the game with users on other consoles.

It is the first time that this has been done and comes after a number of vocal pleas from gamers.

The company said that it made the decision after a comprehensive evaluation process and it has now got an open beta version of Fortnite for cross platform play.

We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective, said John Kodera on the PlayStation Blog.

The decision has been met positively by gamers but some Fortnite fans have been left wondering what happens if they have two or more Epic Games accounts that they have created to use on different consoles.

Epic Games has since addressed these concerns in a recent post on the Fortnite Twitter.

It has put together a plan of action to address the concerns and ensure that players dont lose out on the fact that the game is now cross-platform across all consoles –

  • An account-merging feature to combine Battle Royale purchases, coming in November.
  • Enabling unlinking a console from one Fortnite account, and relinking to another Fortnite account. Coming in a few days.
