Astral Chain – Platinum get their first UK number one

PlatinumGames earns their first ever UK number one, as Wreckfest takes second place and Control has to settle for fourth.

Why last week turned into such a traffic jam of new releases is a mystery understood only by the publishers themselves but while its an inauspicious start for some games, especially Remedys Control, only around 1,500 sales separated the number one game from number four.

Astral Chain becomes the sixth Switch game to hit number one this year but its the first PlatinumGames title to ever do so, even though its only their fourth most successful launch in terms of units sold – behind Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and NieR:Automata.

As ever, digital sales arent included so given the small difference in sales between the top four the overall top 10 may be different if theyre included, although Astral Chains performance is especially impressive given its only on one format.

Racing game Wreckfest came in at number two, 1,100 sales behind Astral Chain, but the battle for third and fourth place was even closer.

The Dark Pictures: Man Of Medan was just 250 copies behind Wreckfest and Control was just 300 copies behind that. The latter is surely not quite the breakthrough launch developer Remedy were hoping for, for their first multiformat release in several years, but its also not as big a disappointment as its chart position may suggest.

Also new this week is Collection Of Mana for the Switch, at number 22, while Marvels swings up to number eight after widespread shop discounts.

Releasing so many games at once seems especially silly given there was nothing out the week before and relatively little this week, especially as Final Fantasy VIII Remastered isnt getting a physical release.

NBA 2K20 and Monster Hunter: World expansion Iceborne are though, so Astral Chain may not be able to hog the number one spot for long.
