Assassins Creed Odyssey – an unsteady start for Ubisofts latest

FIFA 19 has kept the new Assassins Creed from the top of the UK sales charts, but Forza Horizon has had its best opening ever.

Assassins Creed has become the latest long-running franchise to see an unusually sharp drop in physical sales, after FIFA 19 experienced a fall of 25% on last year.

Chart-Track only covers physical sales, and not digital, and those are falling naturally every year but both FIFA and Assassins Creed have slipped by more than average – with Assassins Creed Odyssey down by almost 26% on last years Origins.

There are a number of qualifying factors though, with Odyssey launching earlier in the year and just a week after the latest FIFA. Theres also the fact that Origins was a soft reboot of the series, that followed a year off for the franchise.

It may be simply that fans werent as hungry for a new entry so soon, with Ubisoft already announcing that there wont be a new one next year.

Although Origins was co-marketed by Microsoft the format breakdown for Odyssey was firmly in favour of the PlayStation 4 at 63% to 37%.

Even with the rise of digital though not all franchises necessarily show a downward trend, and Forza Horizon 4 actually sold better than 2016s Forza Horizon 3 and came very close to equalling the total sales of Assassins Creed Odyssey.

As a result, Forza Horizon 4 became the fastest-selling entry in the series so far, no doubt helped by the fact that the game is actually set in the UK.

The third highest new entry of the week was Super Mario Party at number five in the all formats chart, which seems a healthy debut for a series that has proven highly inconsistent in terms of both quality and sales.

Meanwhile, PlayStation 4 exclusive Fist Of The North Star: Lost Paradise debuted at number 21 in the all formats chart, with PlayStation VR title Astro Bot: Rescue Mission at 22.

This Friday sees the release of Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4, which will surely knock FIFA 19 from the number one spot next week. Although WWE 2K19 also releases this week, along with more niche titles Disgaea 1 Complete and The World Ends With You -Final Remix-.
