Uncharted 4 - a lovely view

Uncharted 4 – top five graphics

A reader gives his view on the best graphics to appear on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, from Forza Horizon 4 to Horizon Zero Dawn.

I think sometimes people can take ogling over video game graphics as kind of shallow, but me… I like a good-looking game. Sure, that doesnt mean its any good, but the first thing I realised when trying to make this list is that most of the best-looking games are actually really good too. And if Fallout 76 is anything to go by the ugliest are the worst.

Im sure theres probably some Im forgetting, and Im absolutely not having a go at the Switch, but these are what I think are the most high-tech games so far this gen.

5. Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
I always hated the Killzone games so I really was not expecting anything good from this, except the graphics. And they are fantastic. The open world is good for a start, not that big but one of the most detailed all gen, with a real density of trees and greenery. Of course its the robots that are the real draw though: massive, with no sign of slow down, and really well designed artistically. The people look good too, even if I think all the characters, including Aloy, are kind of boring.

4. Forza Horizon 4 (XO)
The Xbox One X is now the most powerful console ever made but youd never guess, given how little Microsoft has taken advantage of it. Theyve only really had one exclusive that does and it is a real beauty. It does always feel a bit like cheating saying a car game has good graphics, as they have far less to do than other games and so have more processing power spare to focus on the visuals. But theres no denying this is a beauty, especially in autumn during the rain.

3. God Of War (PS4)
One of those games that draws you in the second you start playing and the presentation is so slick you almost forget youre playing a video game. God Of War is a stunning looking game and the human characters are second only to Uncharted (Im sure Sony must share some tech amongst its developers). Theres a real solidity to the graphics too, probably better than any of the games on this list, but what keeps it back slightly is how un-interactive the game world is. Its semi-open world but very constrained in terms of invisible walls and the like, which is a shame.

2. Uncharted 4 (PS4)
These top two are the real contenders and in terms of human characters and facial animation Uncharted is the clear winner. To the point where Red Dead Redemption II is actually quite poor at times, especially with minor characters and hair. But Uncharted is so good I doubt itll be bettered much even in the next gen. The environments are great too, especially the Madagascar sections, even if theyre a lot more smaller than any of the other games in this list.

1. Red Dead Redemption II (XO/PS4)
The only non-exclusive on my list but Id be interested to see how anyone can argue that the landscape and open world isnt the most amazing thing theyve ever seen. Even after all these hours I am constantly in awe at how realistic it looks and just how vast and varied it all is, and with so much to see and do. Like I said, the characters arent the best, but theyre still well above average and overall Id have to say Red Dead is the best-looking game ever.
