Donald Trump has told the National Rifle Association he is withdrawing from a UN-supported international arms treaty.

The US president told the pro-gun lobby group conference he would not ratify the accord, which had been signed by Barack Obama in 2013, but has not yet been ratified by US legislators.

The Arms Trade Treaty regulates the multi-billion dollar international trade in conventional weapons, including small arms, battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships.

Mr Trump told delegates he was "taking our signature back" as the treaty was "badly misguided".

The UN responded by saying the treaty was "a landmark achievement in the efforts to ensure responsibility in international arms transfers".
