Kanye West has donated $150,000 (£116,000) to the family of Jemel Roberson, a security guard from Chicago who was shot and killed by police after he tackled a gunman.

On Friday evening, Jemels GoFundMe page, which is run on behalf of his mother Beatrice, was flooded with 10 payments of $15,000 (£11,600) under the name Kanye West.

The total amount raised currently stands at more than $300,000 (£230,000), double the target amount.

The GoFundMe page reads: Sadly, Jemels life was tragically and unexpectedly cut short this morning as he tried to save others from senseless violence. Today, many remember him as a hero; one who put others before himself.

Jemel died on 11 November as he attempted to disarm a gunman. The 26-year-old was working at a bar when a fight broke out and shots were fired.

Illinois Police have since said they are investigating a white officer, who has been placed on administrative leave.

Witness Adam Harris told Chicago television station WGN that Jemel had somebody on the ground with his knee in back, with his gun in his back, like, “Dont move.”

Everybody was screaming out, “Security!” He was a security guard, he added, but police saw a black man with a gun, and basically killed him.

Jemel died of his injuries at a hospital.

Despite his donations to Jemels GoFundMe, Kanyes faced some pretty hefty criticism lately.

Singer Macy Gray called out the rapper for his support of Donald Trump, describing it as not real.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, she said: I think people are welcome to support who they want to support, but my thing is, he only supports him when his album is coming out.

I just think its not real. Every time he has an album coming out, he decides to support Trump.
