The Logie Awards may have moved to the Gold Coast this year, but you can still pick up an actual Logie Award in Melbourne, if you fancy it. The 1970 silver Logie for Best Overseas Show, which was awarded to the classic hippie cop show The Mod Squad, is going up for auction this Thursday.

You can expect to pay between $1,200 and $1,500 if you want to take home the TV award without having to actually be on television – which is cheaper than the travel and accommodation necessary to attend the Gold Coast ceremony anyway.

Nora Merralls of Leonard Joel Auction House says the item is pretty special. “The [Logies] has such a great history in Australia, very unique history.”

The Mod Squad holds a special place in that unique history: The shows star Michael Coel provided one of the Logies most infamous moments when he uttered a certain four letter word beginning with 's' during his drunken acceptance speech for their win for Best American Show in 1973.

Unlike Academy Award winners, Logie winners are free to do with the award what they please.

Previously, Jack Thompsons 1985 Best Actor Logie for Waterfront sold to a collector for $4,312 after being discovered in a basement, unbeknownst to Thompson. It was eventually returned to the actor.

Leonard Joel is projecting a bit less than that for The Mod Squads gong, given the lack of personalisation on the award.

The auction house previously had Bunney Brookes Logie for Best Lead Actress in 1980 up for auction, but it was reportedly in poor condition and did not sell. Not to worry, though: Brookes 1974 Logie for Best Australian Actress was for $2,225 on eBay nine years ago.

In April 2013, actress Rowena Wallace sold her 1984 Silver Logie for Sons and Daughters for $4,050 on eBay in an effort to alleviate financial difficulties. Just a few months prior she had tried to sell her Gold Logie from the same year, but legal issues forced the withdrawal of the trophy.

The auction for The Mod Squad Logie, listed under a private seller, will take place on Leonard Joels premises in South Yarra on Thursday, June 21, at 2pm.
