How the iconic green SAG Award is made

Ah, awards season – where we wonder who will take out the best of the best for the past year’s cinematic and silver screened endeavors.

There will be laughs, there will be tears, there will be many an emotional acceptance speech.

We also wonder how these said awards are made, as they’re handed out to the stars.

As we approach the Screen Actors Guild Awards – held on Sunday eve in Los Angeles – we discovered a lot goes into making the gong that features an expressionless performer – with a pair of impressive guns, may we add – holding aloft comedy and tragedy masks, the traditional theatre marker.

TMZ went behind the scenes of the entire casting process and revealed it takes a serious volume of molten bronze to cast the impressively intricate statues, with at least three workers, clad in hazmat suits, doled with the dangerous task of pouring the scorching material into molds.

Once the naked man statue in question is solidified for the first time, he gets fired up several more times at the American Fine Arts Foundry before he’s dusted with layers of copper nitrate to get the statue’s iconic green color.

The Hollywood Reporter calculated the entire process is made of 15 steps, so whoever gets their mitts on one of these guys tonight better be darn thankful.

This year the awards will be hosted by Kristen Bell, televised in the US at 1am UK time.
