Demi Lovato has always been open about having a eating disorder, but the superstar is letting go of the notion of ‘perfect’ by talking about her imperfections and eating challenges.
Posting a ‘happy’ snap of herself in a bathing suit, the star opened up about her eating disorder journey and how she is learning to love her body just the way it is.
In the caption of the body positive pic, she wrote: ‘So, I’m insecure about my legs in this picture but I’m posting it because I look so happy and this year I’ve decided I’m letting go of my perfectionism and embracing freedom from self criticism.’
‘Learning to love my body the way it is is challenging but life changing. Giving up my eating disorder has been the most challenging journey of my life but I work every day towards solid recovery even if I mess up sometimes.’
The 25-year-old struggled with bulimia for years and opened up about the constant struggle dealing with the disease in her YouTube documentary – Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated.
In the documentary, Demi admits although she has remained five-years clean from a previous alcohol and drug addiction, ‘one thing I haven’t fully recovered from is my eating disorder’.
After admitting to a relapse on camera, the singer/songwriter explained: ‘Food is still the biggest challenge in my life and it controls … I don’t want to give it the power to say it controls my every thought, but it’s something that I’m constantly thinking about.’
Entering a new year, Demi confessed that dealing with an eating disorder is still challenging, but she is working ‘every day towards solid recovery’ and is encouraging others to do the same.
Adding some words of encouragement to her fans, she added: ‘Today I’m feeling strong. You all can do it too. It IS possible. Thank you God for this new chapter in my life. #EDrecovery #happyAF’
Fans were quick to bombard the actress, who rose to fame with her role on Disney’s Camp Rock, with praise, with one follower writing: ‘You are my inspiration to keep strong thank you’.
Demi has recently collaborated with Kate Hudson’s sportswear brand Fabletics for her own range of active wear.
