Twin infants who were left in a parked car after their father forgot they were in there have died, say police.

The 11-month-old boy and girl were left in the back seat of the silver Honda Accord on Friday morning before the man, named in reports as 37-year-old Juan Rodriguez, reported for his job at a hospital in New York.

Temperatures passed 30C (85F) during the day but even an outdoor temperature of just 16C (61F) can be fatal inside a closed car, where the temperature can climb rapidly.

After Mr Rodriguez completed his eight-hour shift he got in the car and drove a short distance before remembering his children, Mariza and Phoenix, were still strapped in their seats in the back.

He jumped out and screamed, according to the New York Times.
