Ellen DeGeneres is a generous lady – even on her own birthday.
During a segment on The Ellen DeGeneres on Thursday, 15 January, Ellen revealed it was her 60th birthday week and as such, she was receiving a lot of letter from viewers – we didn’t know at this point there would be one in particular that would leave us crying into our keyboards.
After reading aloud a letter from Noah Copeland, a Supply Officer in the Navy, Ellen invited his unwitting girlfriend Maura – who was in the audience – onstage for a quick chat.
Maura revealed that because Noah was deployed to the remote Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia, she hasn’t seen him in over a year.
Little did she know, though, her boyf was back on US soil and ready to be reunited with Maura, thanks to a little help from Ellen.
And obviously things got real emotional, real fast.
Noah was on hand to give Maura a big ol’ bunch of flowers and two tickets to Ellen’s birthday show on Friday, but Maura couldn’t resist jumping into his arms for a big hug first.
And as if this story couldn’t get any more emosh, the loved-up pair revealed how a planned holiday to Puerto Rico was ruined by Hurricane Maria in 2017, so they decided to donate their holiday money to the island’s relief fund instead of re-planning their vacation somewhere else.
As a way to say thank you for such a generous donation, DeGeneres gave Maura a six-night trip to Hawaii.
‘I can’t give you a gift because you’re not allowed to accept anything because you’re in the military,’ she said to Noah, before turning to Maura and adding: ‘I can give you a gift – and if you choose to include him that’s your business.’
Now, try and tell us you haven’t reached for the tissues at least once already.
Ellen’s 60th birthday celebrations were carried on today by the likes of Kristen Bell, Justin Timberlake and Dax Shepard, who serenaded the veteran presenter with a rather, err, interesting birthday song.
