Total War: Three Kingdoms – a whole new world of war

Sega has revealed a brand new historical Total War game, as the series travels to 2nd century China for the first time.

Since the last two games have both been set in the Warhammer fantasy universe it’s been a long time since Creative Assembly has made a mainline Total War game with a historical setting.

It’s even longer since there’s been one with a genuinely new location and time period, but the idea of a game set in ancient China actually seems a very good fit for the series.

The second century time period was made famous by the classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms and has been used by many Japanese-made franchises such as Dynasty Warriors and the strategy-orientated Romance Of The Three Kingdoms series.

At the moment there’s very little information beyond what you can glean from the trailer above, but pre-orders are already being taken on Steam, and it offers the following description:

Three heroes, sworn to brotherhood in the face of tyranny, rally support for the trials ahead. Scenting opportunity, warlords from China’s great families follow suit, forming a fragile coalition in a bid to challenge Dong Zhuo’s remorseless rule. Will they triumph against the tyrant, or will personal ambition shatter their already crumbling alliance and drive them to supremacy?

Total War: Three Kingdoms is due for release this autumn, and it’ll be interesting to see how much Sega tries to push it in China itself.

The game is not to be confused with the new A Total War Saga sub-series, which was announced last year and intends to focus on smaller scale conflicts. The first is subtitled Thrones Of Britannia, and is also due out this year.
